What is a sump?

A sump is a container located along side or underneath the aquarium that holds water and houses components of your systems life support like heaters, protein skimmers, probes and filters.   

Other benefits associated with a sump are:

• Hides unsightly equipment from the display tank
• Increases system stability with added water volume
• Improves gas exchange and increases water oxygen
• Sustains consistent water height and salinity within the display tank

The IceCap Reef Sump was developed around the requirements of the modern every day reef aquarist.

Water from the aquarium passes through a sturdy 1in bulkhead into the first chamber for bubble diffusion.

The IceCap sumps come equipped with 1" intakes.

Water then spills over the Built-in filter sock holder to grab large particles as it passes through the filter sock to polish the water and help keep the sump clean.

These prefilter chambers are capped with a lid to minimalize sound and evaporation.

IceCap Sumps come with lids to reduce noise.

Water is then quietly and gently guided below the surface and proceeds into to the skimmer compartment and refugium if you happen to have an XL sump model. The skimmer compartment is ideal location to house most of your systems equipment like skimmers, heaters and other filters.

The water level within the skimmer compartment can be easily adjusted from 5-9 inches by moving the adjustable height baffle at the end of the compartment. Simply loosen the two screws and move the gate up or down depending on your desired sump depth or to meet the requirements of your protein skimmer.

A triple probe holder is strategically incorporated onto the adjustable gate so that the probes are not surrounded by stagnant water but instead high flow to ensure accuracy.

At the end of the sump you will find a spacious return pump section suitable to house most submersible return pumps as well as enough room for a secondary feed pump for reactors or manifolds.

Directly next to the return section is a chamber isolated from the rest of the sump intended for storing fresh water for auto top off to manage your systems evaporation. There is a slot at the top of the wall separating the fresh water reservoir and the return section intended to run pump cable or tubing from your ATO system.

An auto top off unit is not included but we recommend the Smart ATO micro.

Now, you may be thinking that a sump with all the benefits we covered is only for the advanced aquarist with large elaborate systems.  Wrong!!!  IceCap has created an array of sumps to fit a wide range of needs.  If you have a small 10 gallon tank or a 350 gallon tank, there is an IceCap sump for you!
