IceCap Pro HOB Turf Scrubbers are made to be effective, safe, easy-to-use, and affordable to battle excessive nutrients. You will not find an easier to set up and use turf scrubber without a sump or complicated plumbing!
IceCap Algae HOB Scrubbers are designed to be placed on the rim of your aquarium or alongside your sump. The Pro HOB Turf Scrubber works by trickling nutrient-rich aquarium water down a screen illuminated on both sides by powerful full-spectrum LED panels. As algae begin to grow on the screen, it "scrubs" your aquarium water of excess nutrients. As the algae cover the entire screen, you "harvest" it by removing a sizable portion of it, thereby removing the contaminants that fueled its growth from your system.
This all-natural form of water filtration can reduce and even eliminate the need for water changes. Best of all, algae scrubbers are safe for use in freshwater, saltwater, and reef aquarium systems.

The IceCap HOB Pro Turf Scrubbers come nearly fully assembled. Just clean off the packaging material and perform the simple steps below.
Insert the bare end of the pipe with the screen into the connection inside the scrubber body. Gently apply pressure to seat the pipe fully, but avoid damaging the scrubber. This slip joint connection is necessary for future turf harvesting and should never be glued.
Lay the light strips with the LED facing the center of the scrubber and with the power chords facing the pump side of the scrubber with the designated chord slots. The LED strips lay within the dry bays of the scrubber body.
Make all connections from light, toggle switch, and power supply. Connect each of the female power connections to the male ends coming from each of the LED light strips. Each light strip has its own individual power switch but both lights utilize a single power supply.
Place the scrubber on the side of the aquarium and secure it in place with the two thumbscrews. Do not overtighten thumbscrews; instead, tighten just enough to ensure that the scrubber is stable as it rests on the rim of the aquarium. Ensure that the LEDs power cables stay clear of the aquarium water.
Carefully insert pipe with feed pump on the other end. It will go into the elbow on the front of the scrubber once installed on the aquarium. The pipe can be trimmed to fit but be sure that the feed pump can never run dry. Although not required, the pipe should be glued to the elbow once it's at its desired height to prevent any chance of the fitting coming loose.
Turn on the feed pump and inspect for any unwanted leaks. Pay close attention to the two dry chambers for the LED panels and where the pump pipe attaches to the scrubber. Condensation in the dry chambers will happen and is completely normal.
To adjust the flow of the feed pump, rotate the intake valve on the pump slightly to lower the flow until the water trickles down the screen. As the turf grows, you will have to increase the water flow to accommodate.
Plug the light's power supply into a timer, system controller, or a standard power outlet. Toggle the power switch to the on position on each LED strip.
Many hobbyists prefer to run their algae scrubbers on a reverse daylight schedule to help stabilize the pH of the aquarium water. This can be accomplished by plugging the LED lights into a timer or aquarium controller and programming it for a 12-hour daily photoperiod that runs opposite to the daylight schedule of the display tank.
Helpful tip: Only use half the lights to allow the screen to seed during the first week after installation.
To harvest the scrubber, unplug the feed pump and remove the top of the scrubber. At the same time, grabbing the spray bar, twist and pull away from the side of the scrubber body. Lift the pipe and algae screen out and then scrape off algae using an old credit card. Be careful to not remove it all - leave some algae behind to seed the next batch so that it will grow faster. Under normal circumstances, you will be harvesting algae every 1-3 weeks.
