Episode 1: IceCap Smart RO/DI System 101 - Installation and Setup

Are you tired of watching mass amounts of waste water going down the drain and racking up your water bills? The IceCap Smart RO/DI System is built to provide super efficient water production fast and safe.

Are you tired of watching mass amounts of waste water going down the drain and racking up your water bills?

The IceCap Smart RO/DI System is the most efficient and eco-friendly water filtration system on the market.

Inefficient RODI units are wasteful and will not only increase your environmental footprint but increase your water bill as well.

Making pure water for your aquarium has never been so smart… UNTIL NOW!

The IceCap Smart RODI is a 4-stage filter that consists of:

The Sediment Pre-filter

The Sediment Pre-filter

1.) The Sediment Pre-filter which efficiently removes particulate matter from your tap water.

The Carbon Block Pre-filter

The Carbon Block Pre-filter

2.) The Carbon Block Pre-filter which removes organics and chlorine from water.

Reverse Osmosis Membrane

3.) A Reverse Osmosis Membrane which is the heart of the filtration system and removes over 98% of most inorganic salts, heavy metals, bacteria and almost all high molecular weight organics.

Deionization Cartridge

4.) And a Deionization Cartridge that provides the final polish of the water and will remove the vast majority of elements that may make it through the membrane.

Chloramine Warning

Over the last few years, some US cities have started to use Chloramines to treat water. Unfortunately, chloramines can quickly exhaust your RO membrane if not removed prior.

A more dense carbon preflight block will be needed if your city water contains Chloramines.

A more dense carbon preflight block will be needed if your city water contains Chloramines.

For this reason, if your city uses Chloramines to treat water, you must use a higher density carbon block capable of properly removing chloramines. If you are unsure if your water contains chloramines, contact your local water department or obtain a simple water test kit to determine if chloramines are present in your tap water.

Included with your IceCap Smart RO/DI System

Each IceCap Smart RODI comes with the following:

  • 3 lengths of RO tubing
  • Garden hose feed adapter
  • 2 Ball valves
  • Drain Saddle
  • Universal wrench
  • Filters
  • Instructions manual.

The SMART RO/DI System can simply be placed on any stable surface.

The SMART RO/DI System can simply be placed on any stable surface or it can be mounted to any secure location.

The SMART RO/DI System can be mounted to any secure location.

Keep in mind that the filter system will gain a substantial amount of weight when it is full of water. For this reason, it is necessary that the filter system be mounted to a strong backing.

The vast majority of the systems connections consist of quick connect fittings. To separate an inserted tube from a fitting, pull the blue retainer tab out and push the cullet in while pulling the tubing away from the fitting.

The IceCap Smart RO/DI System comes equipped with all quick connect fittings

Installing the tube into the fitting could not be easier. Simply push the RO line firmly into the fitting and re-insert the retainer.

Prepping your IceCap Smart RO/DI System

After the unit has been securely mounted, getting it up and running is as simple as the following 5 steps:

Step 1 - Connect Water Supply

To connect the WATER SUPPLY – attach the WHITE feed line to a cold water supply using the included garden hose feed adapter.

Use the supplied garden hose adapter to connect your IceCap Smart RO/DI System to a cold water supply.

Use the supplied garden hose adapter to connect your IceCap Smart RO/DI System to a cold water supply.

If your faucet or utility sink does not have garden hose thread, you can purchase a feed water adapter or a faucet coupler from your local hardware. Install the ball valve in line between the RODI and the feed source to conveniently shut off the water to the system.

Installing of of the supplied ball valves between the water line and your IceCap Smart RO/DI System will make it convenient to quickly shut off.

WARNING: Never run hot water greater than 100 degree Fahrenheit through the system.

Step 2 - Connect Waste Water

Next Connect the RED WASTE WATER LINE to the supplied drain saddle and place it in a drain.

The waste water fitting can be easily found by the color Red.

The waste water fitting can be easily found by the color Red.

Connect the waste water line (red) to the supplied drain saddle or place it into a drain.

Connect the waste water line (red) to the supplied drain saddle or place it into a drain.

This line will produced a good amount of pressure and should be secured and directed into a drain at all times.

Step 3 - Install and Flush Pre-filters

To flush pre-filters, place the BLUE product water line into your drain. Remove pre-filter packaging and install in their appropriate filter housing. DO NOT install the TFC membrane or DI cartridge at this point. Slowly open the cold water supply valve and allow the first two housings to fill. Double and triple check the system to ensure that all fittings are tight and leak-free.

When flushing the prefilters, do not install either the TFC membrane or the DI resign.

When flushing the prefilters, do not install either the TFC membrane or the DI resign.

Plug in the RO/DI power supply and allow the controller to warm up and begin flushing water through the system by running for 15 minutes to flush the sediment and carbon-block filter cartridges.

Flush the unit for 15 minutes after replacing the prefilters.

Flush the unit for 15 minutes after replacing the prefilters.

Although not commonly done, flushing the pre-filters will help maximize the TFC membrane life. Tip: you can set the controller timer to run for 15min.

Step 4 - Install and Flush the RO Membrane

In order to install and flush the membrane you must Press and hold the TIMER MODE BUTTON for 3 sec to turn OFF the IceCap Smart controller.

Flush the unit for 15 minutes after replacing the prefilters.

Press and hold the "Power" button for 3 seconds to turn off your IceCap Smart RO/DI System

Close the feed valve to turn off the supply of water to the system. Do not install the DI cartridge at this point but leave the pre-filters in place. Remove the TFC membrane from the protective bag and install it into its housing at the top of the RO unit.

You will be required to disconnect the tubing in order to unscrew the cap.

Flush the unit for 15 minutes after replacing the prefilters.

You will need to disconnect the tubing prior to removing the RO cartridge.

Flush the unit for 15 minutes after replacing the prefilters.

Installing the RO membrane on your new IceCapSmart RO/DI System

Securely seat the RO membrane in to the housing. Once the RO membrane is seated, screw on the top and reconnect the tubing.

Securely mount the RO membrane cartridge to the top of the system.

Once everything is connected, once again open the feed valve to turn on the water then Press and hold the TIMER MODE BUTTON for 3 sec to turn on the system and allow the controller to warm up and begin flushing water through the system for 30 minutes to remove any anti-bacterial agent from the TFC membrane. I suggest setting the controllers timer to run for 30 min.
