Using algae to reduce nutrient loading is a natural way to control algae. The technique works but early algae scrubbers were difficult to maintain and keep working. Todays fully self-contained algae or turf scrubbers make it easy to control nutrients in your reef aquarium. Here’s how they work. A small amount of aquarium water passes through the scrubber.  Screens inside the scrubber give the algae a surface to grow on LED lights inside the unit stimulate the algae to grow and absorb phosphate, nitrate and other nutrients. Periodically some of the algae is harvested, which removes the nutrients from the system. The algae begin to re-grow on the screens, starting the nutrient removal cycle again.  Algae scrubbers also act as a refugium for pods and other crustaceans that serve as live foods for fish and corals. Reef Octopus and IceCap algae scrubbers provide an easy way for you to reduce nitrate, phosphate and algae growth inside your tank.
