IceCap Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) removes yellowing pigments, odors, and toxins from aquarium water. High-pore density for crystal clear reef and fish tanks. Available in small (0.8 LBS), medium (1 LB), large (2 LBS), and extra-large sizes (24 LBS).
IceCap Granular Activated Carbon is a professional-grade chemical filtration media designed to keep your aquarium water looking invisible. Over time, fish waste, uneaten food, and natural metabolic processes release dissolved organic compounds that turn aquarium water a subtle yellow. This tint doesn't just look unsightly—it actively blocks the specific blue light spectrum that corals need to thrive. IceCap GAC acts like a chemical sponge, pulling these organics, odors, and pollutants out of the water column.
Unlike standard "aquarium charcoal," IceCap GAC is a high-grade bituminous coal-based carbon. It features a massive internal surface area with macro-pores and micro-pores perfectly sized to capture common aquarium toxins. It is an essential safeguard for "mixed reef" tanks, where different coral species release chemical toxins to compete for space. By running IceCap GAC, you neutralize these chemical signals, leading to better polyp extension and faster growth. Whether used in a media bag or a dedicated reactor, IceCap GAC is the most effective way to ensure a clear, healthy, and odor-free aquatic environment.
High Macroporosity: Optimized to remove larger organic molecules that cause water discoloration.
Odor Elimination: Quickly removes the "fishy" or "earthy" smell associated with high-nutrient systems.
Pollutant Removal: The go-to solution for removing residual medications after a treatment cycle is complete.
Phosphate Free: Carefully processed to ensure it does not introduce unwanted phosphates into your reef system.
Optimized Sizing: The granular shape provides a balance of high surface area and excellent flow-through, preventing clogging.
Visual Check: Perform the "bucket test"—view your water against a white background. If a yellow tint is visible, the carbon is exhausted.
Routine Maintenance: For most reef systems, carbon should be replaced every 3–4 weeks to prevent the media from becoming a biological filter.
IceCap Granular Activated Carbon (Select Volume)
Material: Bituminous Coal-Based Carbon
Form: Granular (Irregular)
Application: Organic and Toxin Removal
Suitability: Marine, Reef, and Freshwater
Rinse Before Use: Even high-quality carbon has fine dust from shipping. Rinse with RO/DI water or under a tap until the runoff is completely clear.
Dosage: Generally, use 1 tablespoon per 3 gallons (1 cup of GAC per 50 gallons) of aquarium water.
Reactor Use: Place in a media reactor with enough flow to keep water moving through the media, but do not fluidize (tumble) the carbon. Tumbling carbon will cause it to grind into fine dust.
Passive Use: Place in a high-quality mesh media bag and set it in a high-flow area of your sump or filter. Massage the bag weekly to prevent detritus buildup.
Post-Medication: If using to remove medicine, use a double dose and replace after 48 hours.
Stop the Tumble. Unlike GFO, carbon should not tumble in a reactor. It is relatively soft; if the grains rub against each other, they will create carbon dust that can irritate the gills of fish and has been linked to HLLE (Head and Lateral Line Erosion) in certain species. Pack it tightly between two sponges.
The "Light Shock" Warning. If your water is very yellow and you add a fresh batch of IceCap GAC, your water will become clear almost overnight. This dramatically increases light penetration. Consider lowering your LED intensity by 10-15% for a few days to prevent "bleaching" sensitive corals.
Air Pore Priming. When you first wet the carbon, you may hear a loud "hissing" or "crackling" sound. This is normal! It is the sound of air escaping the millions of tiny pores as they fill with water—a sign of high-quality, high-porosity carbon.
