Highlights:
Phosphate Macro-nutrient Fertilizer for Planted and Demanding Aquariums
The healthy growth of aquarium plants requires approximately 20 different nutrients, with phosphate being one of the most essential macronutrients. Along with CO2 and light, it is critical in promoting balanced and healthy plant growth. Plants utilize phosphate to construct a range of organic compounds, and it also plays a key role in energy metabolism as ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Furthermore, phosphate is essential for cell membranes and DNA, making it a crucial nutrient. As phosphate is typically scarce in the wild, plants have developed highly efficient methods for enrichment. In normal, planted community aquariums, the addition of phosphate is optional as it is usually present in sufficient or even excessive amounts from fish excretions and food. However, demanding planted aquariums such as aquascaping and Holland aquariums have higher nutrient requirements, especially for macronutrients.
Recognize Phosphate Deficiency in the Aquarium
Phosphate deficiency can quickly occur in these types of aquaria. The plants then stop growing. Shoots remain short, leaves are small and often turn dark green. Some species may also turn purple due to the accumulation of red leaf pigments (anthocyanins).
Remedy Phosphate Deficiency in the Aquarium
Keeping track of phosphate levels and supplementing if necessary is crucial for maintaining a healthy plant aquarium. The nutrient consumption of each individual aquarium varies according to factors such as plant quantity, species, animal stocking, feeding, water changes, and growth conditions. Therefore, the amount of fertilizer required should be determined on an individual basis. For aquariums that require all three macronutrients (N, P, and K), using Dennerle Plant Care NPK is recommended. The nutrient ratios have been carefully chosen to ensure equal absorption by plants without any deficiencies or accumulation of individual nutrients. Maintaining biological balance is essential, as nutrient imbalances can lead to algae problems. In cases where an aquarium requires more phosphate, Dennerle Plant Care P should be used. Regular measuring and dosing of phosphate is recommended. Phosphate is quickly absorbed by plants and can be stored well. In aquariums with phosphate deficiency, adding phosphate initially causes it to disappear quickly from the water. After 7-14 days of regular addition, the measurable phosphate content in the aquarium water increases again. Phosphate can be used to control both plant and algae growth. To make life difficult for unwanted algae, it is recommended to use phosphate as a shock fertilization with 0.1-0.2mg/L. A complete nutrient supply and best possible plant growth can be achieved by using a macronutrient fertilizer in combination with a micronutrient fertilizer and Plant Care Pro. It is also recommended to perform a partial water change of 25-50% per week for magnificent plant growth and healthy fish and shrimp. This helps remove waste and inhibitors and prevents nutrient imbalances.
Dosage
For precise and accurate dosing of fertilizer, use 2 ml per 100 L to add 0.2 mg/L phosphate. The recommended concentration range for phosphate is 0.1-0.3 mg/L (max. 1 mg/L) to avoid unnecessary algae growth. You can use Plant Care P as a weekly or daily fertilizer.
