Reef Octopus Classic 90-HOB Protein Skimmer

The Reef Octopus Classic 90-HOB (SKU: CLSC-90HOB) takes a completely fresh approach to hang-on-back filtration. While standard HOB skimmers rely on boxy, rectangular chambers that can cause performance-robbing water turbulence, the Classic 90-HOB features a true cylindrical 4-inch reaction chamber. This architectural design, combined with a smooth conical body-to-neck transition, handles the air-and-water mixture incredibly gently. The result is a highly stable, uniform foam column that efficiently strips dissolved organic compounds out of aquariums up to 130 gallons without ever requiring a sump.

Driven by the ultra-efficient Aquatrance 1000s pinwheel pump, this skimmer is uniquely configured with the motor hanging externally beneath the main acrylic body. This layout ensures a remarkably slim profile that requires minimal clearance behind your aquarium glass. Additionally, the intake plumbing features a built-in surface skimmer box. By constantly drawing water directly from the surface line, it strips away the protein-heavy oil film that naturally accumulates and blocks light. With its robust cast acrylic construction, quiet air silencer, and easy-to-empty collection cup, the Classic 90-HOB delivers pristine water quality to standalone marine systems.

Key Features

  • Turbulence-Reducing Cylinder: Circular design allows microbubbles to rise smoothly without colliding or popping prematurely.

  • Aquatrance 1000s Pump: Pulls 420 L/H of air while consuming an energy-saving 9 Watts of power.

  • Integrated Surface Degreaser: Keeps the top of your water column pristine, maximizing gas exchange and PAR penetration.

  • Precision Control Output: A fine-tuned gate valve mechanism allows you to dictate exactly where the water line rests inside the body.

  • Sump-Free Adaptability: The perfect elite filtration upgrade for standard, standalone rimmed or rimless saltwater aquariums.

  1. Assemble the intake piping, surface skimmer attachment, and the underlying external Aquatrance 1000s pump.
  2. Hang the cylindrical skimmer body onto the rim of your aquarium, using the plastic thumbscrews at the base to ensure the unit hangs perfectly level.
  3. Manually prime the system by pouring aquarium water directly into the main skimmer chamber until it reaches roughly 8 inches (20cm) deep.
  4. Completely pinch or seal the air silencer hose to block air intake, then plug the pump into a GFCI wall outlet.
  5. Once the pump forces water through the pipes and establishes a full siphon loop, release the airline to kickstart active microbubble production.
  6. Adjust the precision control output valve so that the microbubble foam transition settles right at the base of the collection cup neck.

Pro Tips:

  • Airline Siphon Trick. If the Aquatrance pump struggles to clear the air out of the intake plumbing during installation or after a cleanup, keep the air valve closed for up to 30 seconds. Blocking the air path forces the pump to pull a pure hydraulic vacuum, which rapidly primes the water siphon loop.
  • Keep the Output Sponge Elevated. Position the output bubble stopper sponge so it sits slightly above your aquarium's water line. This allows returning water to vent air smoothly, drastically reducing the amount of tiny microbubbles that can otherwise get blasted downward into your display tank.
  • Monthly Venturi Maintenance. Because the pump draws air from a humid area right against the back of the tank, the small venturi nozzle can slowly accumulate salt crust. Every month, pull the flexible airline and give the gray injection nozzle a poke with a toothpick, or squirt a few milliliters of warm RO/DI water down the tube to instantly melt away any hidden salt blockages.
