IceCap In-Sump 18w UV Sterilizer — Internal Assembly
The IceCap In-Sump 18W UV Sterilizer (SKU: IC-UVR-18INT) is an authentic, completely integrated water purification system distributed by CoralVue to promote elite biosecurity and crystal-clear water conditions in freshwater setups up to 600 gallons and marine reef systems up to 60 gallons. Standard traditional UV sterilizers require complex external plumbing paths, requiring users to cut vinyl lines, secure hose clamps, and find space under the cabinet to hard-mount bulky plastic canisters that run a constant risk of leaking. The IceCap In-Sump series completely rewrites this framework by moving the entire vessel directly inside your existing filtration sump footprint. If a seal ever experiences a slow leak, the water falls harmlessly back into your filtration basin, offering absolute peace of mind against room floods.
This complete kit arrives with an energy-efficient IceCap DC-700 Feed Pump, matched precisely to handle the internal fluid dynamics of the 18-watt radiation chamber. As the pump forces an optimized stream of water past the high-output UVC lamp, the radiation instantly targets free-floating pathogens and single-celled algae cells. This targeted process shatters the internal cellular bonds of green hair algae spores and infectious microscopic parasites before they can settle onto your fish or rocks. Because it only acts on organisms suspended in the water moving through the unit, it will never disrupt or degrade the beneficial nitrifying bacterial colonies growing securely on your stationary bio-media, sand bed, or liverock.
Key Features:
Eradicates Green Water Outbreaks: Destroys free-floating micro-algae cells in the water column, preventing dense green water blooms and maintaining pristine visual clarity.
Suppresses Aquatic Pathogens: Drastically reduces infectious pathogen counts in the water loop, protecting your fish and corals against horizontal disease transfer.
Tool-Free Maintenance Engineering: Hand-tightened ballast cap and top sealing thumb screws allow for stress-free monthly maintenance and straightforward annual bulb replacements.
Note: This self-contained internal filtration unit contains (1) 18W UV housing, (1) DC-700 feed pump, an 18-watt high-output bulb, a quartz sleeve, and mounting bracket clips. Replacement lamps and quartz housings are sold under separate product categories.

Instructons:
- Unbox all components. Crucial Pre-Check: Carefully slide the open-ended quartz sleeve out of its protective tube. Inspect it closely for hairline cracks or fractures caused during transit before beginning assembly.
- Install the included DC-700 feed pump by pushing its output nozzle firmly onto the molded receive barb located at the base of the external UV vessel housing.
- Align the pins on your 18-watt lamp with the female socket on the ballast cord and push them together firmly. Carefully lower the connected lamp element down into the dry center chamber of the installed quartz sleeve. Warning: Never touch the raw glass of the bulb with bare hands; skin oils can burn into the glass and cause early failure. Wipe with rubbing alcohol if touched.
- Insert the combined sleeve and bulb assembly straight into the upper cavity of the UV housing. Thread the plastic ballast collar nut clockwise by hand to lock it down. Hand-tighten only; never use wrenches or channel locks.
- Position the assembled UV sterilizer vertically inside a chosen chamber of your sump setup. Ensure the water level matches your requirements, and verify that the electrical cord plate at the top sits securely above the high water baseline.
- Connect the DC-700 pump line to its power bar outlet. Once water is flowing smoothly and you verify there are no leaks around the top plate seals, plug the electronic UV ballast into a dedicated, GFCI-protected outlet to fire up the lamp.
Pro Tips:
- Target a Slow Water Flow Turnover Rate If Fighting Active Parasites. To target and kill tough protozoan parasites (like Marine Ich or Velvet), you need a high UVC radiation exposure dosage, which requires a slower water velocity. Adjust your feed pump loop down to a target turnover rate of 0.5 to 1.5 times your total aquarium water volume per hour. If you are only seeking to eliminate green water blooms or clear out basic bacterial cloudiness, you can safely open up your flow rates to a faster turnover of 3 to 4.5 times your tank volume per hour.
- Ensure the Top Electronic Plate Always Rests Clear Above Your Sump's Water Line. While these internal sterilizers are labeled as "In-Sump" units, they are not fully submersible water pumps. The main body column handles water contact perfectly, but the upper electronic collar, cord entrance paths, and ballast nut connections must remain completely dry. Always position the bracket layout so that the top section sits at least an inch or two above the maximum high-water line of your sump compartment to protect against electrical short circuits.
- Swap Out Both Your UV Bulb and Your Quartz Sleeve Annually. Even if your 18W bulb continues to emit a visible blue glow after a year of continuous service, its germicidal UVC output wavelength degrades significantly after 10,000 hours of run-time, losing its ability to sanitize pathogens. At the same time, the outer quartz sleeve will slowly develop a microscopic mineral crust that blocks light transmission. For top-tier performance, replace both the bulb and the quartz sleeve concurrently every 12 months.
