CO2 Removal Media

There is solid research showing that carbon dioxide levels in our homes is quite high. Modern buildings are so well insulated that CO2 accumulates to unhealthy levels. If your running a protein skimmer it’s pumping a high volume of room air directly into the aquarium water. The CO2-rich air reacts inside the skimmer to produce a non-stop dose of carbonic acid that flows into the tank. The carbonic acid neutralizes carbonate hardness and reduces pH buffer. The continuous acidification of the water pushes the pH to drop despite your attempts to stabilize it. The remedy to this is a carbon dioxide scrubber. The scrubber acts as an air filter for your protein skimmer. CO2-adsorbing media packed inside the scrubber removes carbon dioxide from the air entering the skimmer. This eliminates the formation of carbonic acid inside your skimmer. You’ll find it much easier to manage pH and alkalinity levels after switching to a CO2 scrubber.
