Reef Octopus VarioS-6S & RODC-5500S Replacement Pinwheel Skimmer Impeller (ROP-VARIOS6S-IMP)
The Reef Octopus VarioS-6S Replacement Pinwheel Impeller (SKU: ROP-VARIOS6S-IMP) is an authentic factory-spec internal drive component distributed by CoralVue to completely revitalize the air injection rate, foam neck consistency, and organic waste extraction of your central protein skimmer. Unlike traditional smooth-vane water impellers designed to push volumetric head-height weight, a fractionating skimmer pump works under heavy intake vacuum pressure. This technical rotor utilizes an open faceplate populated by a high-density matrix of rigid pins. As incoming water and raw atmospheric air meet inside the intake venturi bottleneck, this spinning cluster forcefully shreds the gas pockets into a hyper-saturated column of microbubbles maximizing your organic skimmate pull.
Operating 24 hours a day inside raw sump water makes this driving core highly vulnerable to internal mechanical interference. Fine calcified shell fragments, stray gravel pieces, or detached carbon pellets can easily bypass your skimmer's intake grid and wedge into the fast-spinning chamber. Because the tolerances inside the clear or open volute covers are highly precise, trapped debris will instantly snap the brittle plastic pins or gouge the exterior polymer casing of the magnet. An imbalanced or pin-depleted fractionating wheel will compromise the venturi vacuum, leading to large turbulent water surges, massive drops in bubble saturation, and loud chattering vibrations. Swapping out a compromised drive core with this fresh original factory assembly instantly realigns your running tolerances, restoring a quiet, efficient organic skim.
Key Features
Rigid Pin Retention Profile: Injection-molded structural pins resist flexing or warping under high variable-speed controller ramps or high organic waste resistance.
Seamless Corrosion-Resistant Encapsulation: Fully shields the strong internal magnets from aggressive saltwater exposure, preventing core swelling and structural motor lockouts.
Dynamic Factory Balancing: Every skimmer pinwheel undergoes electronic calibration to guarantee perfect axial rotation, preserving your pump's internal bearing sleeves.
(Note: This replacement assembly includes the integrated magnetic rotor body and pinwheel faceplate only. Polished ceramic axle shafts, spacing shims, rubber end cushions, and main pump motor blocks are sold separately).
Verified Hardware Compatibility
Reef Octopus Controllable DC Skimmer Pumps: Sized explicitly as the native matching replacement fractionating impeller for the VarioS-6S Controllable Skimmer Pump and the legacy RODC-5500S Controllable Skimmer Pump.
(Note: This is a specialized pinwheel asset built strictly for gas fractionation. It is not compatible with standard VarioS-6 water circulation return pumps, nor will it fit smaller VarioS-2S/4S or extra-large VarioS-8S skimmer engine frames).
What’s Included:
(1) Reef Octopus Replacement VarioS-6S / RODC-5500S Skimmer Pump Pinwheel Magnetic Impeller Assembly
(Note: Ceramic axle shafts, friction spacing washers, rubber end cushion bushings, and clear acrylic open volute covers are sold separately).

Power down your pump controller and pull the main AC/DC power supply from the wall socket to completely eliminate live electricity before handling internal mechanics.
Disconnect your flexible venturi air lines and slide the VarioS-6S pump assembly straight backward off the molded mounting rails inside your skimmer base.
Remove your grey intake venturi nozzle from the front cover, then rotate your clear acrylic open volute faceplate counter-clockwise across the bayonet tracking to slide it off the motor face.
Firmly grasp the front plate of the old pinwheel impeller and pull it straight out of the motor block cavity. Caution: The internal magnetic pull will resist release—hold tight to prevent pinching your fingers.
Inspect your existing central ceramic shaft, the clear plastic spacing shim washer, and the deep rear bushing seat to confirm they are completely free of cracks, scoring lines, or rough calcium deposits.
Take your new ROP-VARIOS6S-IMP impeller, align its internal bearing channel over the center axle shaft, and slide it straight back into the open motor cavity carefully.
- Mind the Magnetic Snap When Reinserting the Rotor. The permanent magnet integrated into this controllable DC skimmer impeller core possesses an exceptionally strong magnetic attraction. When sliding the fresh replacement core back into the metal-lined stator housing, the magnetic pull will aggressively pull the impeller out of your fingertips to snap it inward. Hold the assembly firmly by its plastic front edges and lower it back into the chamber slowly to keep from slamming the delicate pinwheel face or pinching your fingers against the motor wall.
- Perform a Citric Acid Descaling Soak Every Quarter. Because skimmer pumps actively blend air with raw aquarium water, the localized introduction of atmospheric air triggers rapid precipitation of calcium carbonate and hard magnesium minerals right onto the warm spinning rotor surfaces. If left uncleaned, this rough crust behaves like coarse sandpaper, grinding down your bearings and creating micro-abrasions along the magnet's shell. Every 3 to 4 months, soak the rotor in a warm bath of citric acid powder to dissolve the buildup safely.
- Always Check Your Spacing Shim Washer and Axle Concurrently. When replacing a worn pinwheel core, always verify that the specialized large-frame spacing shim washer (SKU: ROP-VAR6-SHIM) is placed back onto the ceramic shaft right behind the impeller hub. Running a brand-new fractionating wheel without this micro-spacer will cause the spinning pins to physically rub against the front volute casing or sit too deep in the stator well. This rubbing will wear down the plastic pins, cause severe operational vibration, and quickly degrade your new investment.
