Reef Octopus Classic HOB Replacement Air Valve (ROP-AV-CLHOB)
The Reef Octopus Classic HOB Air Valve (SKU: ROP-AV-CLHOB) is an authentic factory-spec replacement air regulation module distributed by CoralVue to re-establish precision control over your hang-on back protein skimmer's performance. For an external skimmer to produce the ideal "dry" or "wet" organic foam, the internal Aquatrance pinwheel pump must pull a highly specific balance of raw atmospheric air alongside incoming aquarium water. Because this small valve sits inline between the open air silencer and the high-draw venturi nozzle, it is constantly exposed to humid salt air. Over time, internal plastic threads can become locked up by calcification, salt creep can crust over the needle seat, or the plastic can crack during aggressive maintenance, leading to an air leak that prevents your skimmer from holding a steady water line.
Replacing your worn or frozen air line adjuster with this genuine OEM component completely eliminates erratic skimmer behavior. The valve utilizes a highly sensitive internal needle valve configuration that lets you make micro-adjustments to your air intake. Restricting or opening the airflow allows you to raise or lower the internal bubble break line to match your tank's bio-load. Additionally, it serves as a critical defense valve during emergency tank water conditions; if a water additive causes your skimmer to suddenly overflow and flood your flooring, a quick twist of this valve restricts the air intake, immediately calming the foam column down until the water stabilizers dissipate.
Key Features
Micro-Threaded Adjustment Dial: Provides high-precision variable feedback, allowing you to tweak your air intake settings down to the millimeter without the dial slipping under vacuum pressure.
Saltwater-Inert Construction: Built using 100% reef-safe, non-leaching plastic composites that will not dry-rot, rust, or bind under heavy salt exposure.
Tapered High-Grip Barbs: Dual connection ends hold tightly to flexible silicone air tubing, preventing accidental hose slide-offs and keeping your cabinet dry.
Compact Low-Mass Silhouette: Sized perfectly to sit cleanly behind your aquarium rim without adding weight that could kink or pull down on your air silencer lines.
Verified Hardware Compatibility
Reef Octopus Classic HOB Series: Classic 90 HOB (BH-90), Classic 100 HOB (BH-100), and Classic 1000 HOB (BH-1000).
Oversized External Families: Classic 2000HOB (BH-2000), BH-300, and legacy BH-100SS or BH-800SS external filtration arrays.
(Note: This valve is designed for the external air intake lines of hang-on-back skimmers. If you are configuring a heavy commercial in-sump model with an oversized metric gate valve framework, please verify your line size requirements before installing).

- Turn off the power supply to your skimmer's Aquatrance pump to stop the suction vacuum through the air intake system.
- Trace the flexible silicone air line down from your hanging air silencer pod to locate the old, clogged adjustment valve.
- Carefully pull the flexible tubing away from the barbed inputs on both sides of the old valve (if the hose is stuck, cut the tip back slightly with shears).
- Take your new ROP-AV-CLHOB air valve and match the barbed ends with your upper silencer hose and lower venturi-bound hose.
- Push the silicone tubing firmly over the tapered barbs until the hose completely covers the retention rings for an airtight friction fit.
- Turn the adjustment dial counter-clockwise to open the valve fully, turn the skimmer pump back on, and slowly dial it clockwise to set your ideal foam line height.
Pro Tips:
- Clear Salt Creep Annually with a Warm Water Flush. Because the valve continuously draws a high vacuum of raw room air through a damp environment, tiny salt crystals will naturally form right on the tip of the internal needle seat. If your skimmer suddenly stops producing bubbles or if the dial becomes hard to turn, do not force the handle. Pull the valve out of the line and drop it into a cup of hot RO/DI water for 10 minutes. The hot water will instantly dissolve the internal salt crust and restore smooth airflow without needing any tools.
- Pair with Fresh Silicone Tubing for an Airtight Seal. If your existing vinyl or silicone air lines are yellowish, brittle, or stretched out at the ends, they can let ambient air sneak past the barbs of your new valve. This extra air intake bypasses the valve's control, making it incredibly frustrating to dial in a precise water level. When replacing your air valve, take a minute to trim a quarter-inch off the ends of your silicone lines—or swap out the line entirely—to guarantee a perfect, airtight seal around the new barbs.
- Use the Valve to Manage "New Skimmer" Over-Foaming. When setting up a new aquarium system or using coral putty glues, your skimmer will naturally over-foam aggressively for a few days due to changes in surface tension. Instead of turning your skimmer off completely or lifting your collection cup awkwardly high, simply turn your new air valve clockwise to restrict the air intake slightly. Restricting the air volume lowers the water line inside the body, allowing you to run the pump continuously to break in the skimmer safely without overflowing your cup.
