Reef Octopus
Globally trusted for premium protein skimmers and pumps, engineered in-house for unmatched reef filtration performance.
This replacement O-ring is a genuine Reef Octopus spare part designed specifically for their Classic Series Hang-On-Back (HOB) protein skimmers. It ensures a watertight seal between the skimmer body and the collection cup, preventing leaks and maintaining optimal air-to-water pressure within the unit.
Features & Benefits
Airtight Seal: Maintains the consistent foam neck height required for efficient nutrient export.
Durability: Made from saltwater-safe materials that resist hardening and cracking over time.
Easy Installation: Pliable design allows for quick replacement without the need for specialized tools.
Maintenance Tip
To extend the life of your O-ring and ensure a better seal, apply a very thin layer of silicone-based, food-grade lubricant (like Molykote 111) to the ring before sliding the collection cup into the skimmer body. This prevents the rubber from binding or tearing.
Replacement Instructions
Turn off the protein skimmer pump.
Carefully remove the collection cup.
Slide the old O-ring off the neck of the cup or out of the groove on the skimmer body.
Clean the area to remove any salt creep or calcium deposits.
Slide the new O-ring into place, ensuring it sits flush without any twists.
Re-insert the cup and resume operation.
Pro Tips
Lubricate for a better fit.
Apply a tiny amount of aquarium-safe silicone lubricant to the new O-ring before installation. This helps the collection cup slide into place more easily and prevents the rubber from "sticking" to the acrylic, which can lead to tearing during removal.
Check for salt creep. If you see white, crusty buildup forming where the cup meets the HOB body, it’s a sign that your O-ring is failing. Replacing it early prevents messy salt buildup from reaching your carpet or hardwood floors.
Keep the neck clean. When you change the O-ring, take a moment to wipe the inside of the collection cup neck. A build-up of slime or salt here can interfere with the friction fit, making even a new O-ring feel less secure.
