Reef Octopus Classic 1000 & 2000HOB Replacement Square Sponge (ROP-HOB-SQSP)

The Reef Octopus Classic 1000 & 2000HOB Square Output Sponge (SKU: ROP-HOB-SQSP) is an authentic factory-spec mechanical filtration component distributed by CoralVue to eliminate unsightly microbubbles and optimize return water clarity on your hang-on back protein skimmer. High-capacity hang-on back skimmers like the Classic 1000HOB and 2000HOB operate via aggressive internal air injection using high-rpm Aquatrance pinwheel pumps. This intense fractionating process fills the main reaction column with billions of microscopic bubbles. While the skimmer's internal baffles are built to isolate this air, a percentage of fine bubbles can naturally slide into the gravity-drain discharge stream, which blows them directly back into your display tank and creates a cloudy, salt-splattered environment.

This specialized square open-cell sponge drops right into the final drainage chamber of the skimmer body. As the air-rich water stream passes through the coarse reticulated grid matrix, the microbubbles are physically forced together, collapsing them into large pockets of air that vent safely out of the open top while clear water returns into the tank. Over months of nonstop operation, these sponges collect trapped organic particles, skin oils, and algae films, causing the foam structure to slowly harden, break down, and clog. Replacing your worn or structural-collapsed foam pad with this original factory block fully restores maximum drainage flow while providing a crystal-clear, bubble-free view of your reef display.

    Key Features

    • True Factory Sizing Tolerances: Cut to meet exact original factory dimensioning specifications to drop into the square discharge bays of the 1000/2000HOB without slipping.

    • Coarse, Long-Lasting Matrix: Resists rapid organic breakdown and handles aggressive salt creep, chemical cleaner baths, and high-velocity water columns seamlessly.

    • 100% Saltwater-Inert Polyurethane: Completely reef-safe formulation will not leach volatile organic compounds, synthetic color dyes, or chemical plasticizers into your water.

    • Mechanical Particulate Catch: Provides a helpful secondary benefit by pulling large floating debris and organic floc out of the water column right before it drains.

    Verified Hardware Compatibility

    • Reef Octopus Classic HOB Series: Sized explicitly as the correct drop-in square safety sponge for the Classic 1000HOB (BH-1000) and Classic 2000HOB (BH-2000) external hang-on back protein skimmers.

    1. Turn off your protein skimmer's pump power supply to stop active water flow through the output chamber before handling the sponge.
    2. Reach into the final square output chamber section located on the exit side of your hang-on back skimmer body.
    3. Pull the old, clogged, or structural-degraded square sponge straight upward out of the chamber tracks and discard it.
    4. Clean the internal acrylic baffle walls with a soft sponge to remove any trapped organic sludge, film algae, or gritty salt creep.
    5. Take your new ROP-HOB-SQSP square sponge, compress it lightly with your fingers, and slide it straight down into the designated output chamber slots.
    6. Verify the sponge sits flat across the water discharge channel path, restart your skimmer pump, and monitor the water line for proper drainage.

    Pro Tips:

    • Rinse the Sponge Weekly to Prevent Nitrate Accumulation. Because this square sponge acts as a highly effective mechanical trap, it will collect fine uneaten fish food, loose algae strands, and biological debris escaping the skimmer body. If you leave this trapped organic waste inside the sponge for weeks without cleaning, it will break down into raw ammonia and fuel a spike in your aquarium's nitrate and phosphate levels. Remove the sponge weekly during your water change routine and squeeze it out thoroughly under warm tap water until it runs perfectly clear.
    • Squeeze the Sponge Inside Sump Water Before Initial Use. Brand-new reticulated foam sponges can occasionally hold tiny pockets of trapped atmospheric air deep inside their structural cells right out of the factory box. If you slide the dry sponge directly into the skimmer chamber and turn on the pump, these micro-pockets can cause the foam pad to float upward out of its tracking, or they can shed temporary microbubbles into your tank for the first few hours. Submerge and squeeze the sponge a few times in a small container of aquarium water to purge the air before sliding it into place.
    • Keep an Extra Replacement Set on Hand. Over continuous cleanings and repeated manual squeezes, the internal cell walls of polyurethane foam will gradually stretch out, soften, and lose their structural elasticity. When the sponge becomes excessively mushy or starts shedding tiny flecks of foam, it loses its ability to pop microbubbles efficiently. Keeping a backup ROP-HOB-SQSP sponge block in your dry cabinet organizer ensures you can replace a worn pad instantly, keeping your water line perfectly balanced without any filtration gaps.
