The Reef Octopus Classic 2000HOB Collection Cup (SKU: ROP-CC-BH2000) is an authentic factory-spec replacement wastewater reservoir distributed by CoralVue to preserve the active nutrient export capabilities of your high-volume hang-on back filtration loop. On an oversized external protein skimmer like the Classic 2000HOB, the collection cup serves as the final destination for concentrated organic waste, protein sludges, and dissolved biological matter lifted out of large display aquariums. Because the skimmer operates on a continuous friction-fit slide neck configuration, the cup must be manually raised or lowered to set your preferred organic extraction height.
Over years of intensive operational service, removing the cup for routine rinsing can lead to accidental drops in utility sinks, fracturing the clear acrylic joints or chipping the lower neck guide. - Turn off your protein skimmer's Aquatrance pump to stop the active foam column from rising before removing any components.
- Carefully loosen the nylon holding screw on your skimmer's neck ring and slide the old collection cup straight up and out.
- Remove your existing collection cup lid and set it aside; slide the black rubber neck O-ring off the old cup neck if it is still usable.
- Clean the inside of your skimmer's main neck port with a soft towel to clear away any built-up organic sludge or hard salt scale.
- Slide your rubber neck O-ring onto the lower neck of the new ROP-CC-BH2000 collection cup, and seat the cup back down into the skimmer body.
- Position the cup at your desired depth line, hand-tighten the nylon bracket screw gently, place your lid on top, and restart your pump.
Pro Tips:
- Never Use Harsh Chemical Solvents or Alcohol to Clean Acrylic. When washing out your new collection cup, never use rubbing alcohol, glass cleaners, or harsh chemical sprays like Windex. Alcohol and chemical solvents will trigger a structural chemical reaction known as "crazing" in cast acrylic, which instantly creates thousands of tiny hairline micro-fractures through the plastic. This permanently clouds the view and destroys the structural integrity of the cup. Wash the unit using only warm tap water and a soft microfiber cloth or sponge.
- Use Citric Acid Baths for Stubborn Calcium Scale. Over several months of continuous operation, hard white rings of calcium carbonate and coralline algae can bake onto the clear acrylic walls of the cup. Do not use metal razor blades or coarse green abrasive pads to scrape them off, as you will permanently gouge the smooth interior paths. Instead, soak the collection cup in a warm bath of water mixed with citric acid powder for 30 minutes. The scale will dissolve entirely, allowing you to wipe it clean without scratches.
- Lubricate the Neck O-Ring for Smooth Tuning. If you find it difficult to slide the collection cup up and down when fine-tuning your skimmer's performance, do not force or yank the assembly. Forcing the clear acrylic cup against a dry rubber ring can split the mounting bracket collar on the main skimmer frame. Pull the cup out and rub a microscopic smear of 100% pure silicone grease or even a drop of water directly onto the black rubber O-ring. This lets the cup glide smoothly for effortless depth calibrations.
