40W Inline High Output UV Sterilizer for Marine and Freshwater Systems Up to 400 Gallons
The IceCap 40W UV Sterilizer is designed to help maintain clear, balanced aquarium water by targeting free-floating algae, bacteria, and other microorganisms. Exposing water to ultraviolet light as it passes through the unit reduces common water quality issues without the use of chemicals.
This 40W model is suited for medium to large aquarium systems and integrates easily into existing filtration setups. Its inline design allows for flexible installation within a sump return or dedicated loop, giving hobbyists control over flow rate and exposure time for different applications.
Key Features:
- 40W UV output for effective water clarification
- Inline design integrates with existing filtration systems
- Targets free-floating algae, bacteria, and microorganisms
- Improves water clarity without chemical additives
- Suitable for saltwater and freshwater aquariums
Ideal For:
- Reef aquariums dealing with water clarity issues
- Freshwater tanks experiencing green water blooms
- Systems requiring additional water sterilization support
- Medium to large aquariums with external filtration
- Hobbyists running sump-based systems
Pro Tips:
- Match wattage to tank volume before buying. The 27W is rated for marine tanks up to 140 gallons, the 40W up to 400 gallons, and the 90W up to 1,000 gallons. Running an undersized model on a larger system will significantly reduce sterilization effectiveness.
- Do not exceed the rated maximum flow rate for sterilization. Flow rate determines UV contact time. Exceeding the rated GPH reduces the UVC dose delivered to the water. For disease treatment, run the unit at or below the rated sterilization flow, not the maximum clarification flow.
- Replace the lamp at 10,000 hours regardless of visible output. T5 UVC lamp output degrades well before the lamp stops glowing. Mark the installation date and replace on schedule. A lamp that appears lit is not necessarily still delivering effective sterilization.
- Keep the quartz sleeve clean. Mineral deposits reduce UVC transmission through the water. Inspect and clean the sleeve at each maintenance interval. Replacement sleeves are available if deposits cannot be removed without damaging the surface.
- Have a spare lamp and sleeve on hand. When the lamp reaches the end of its life or a sleeve cracks, having replacements immediately available avoids downtime in a running system.
- Never look directly at the glowing UV bulb while it is powered on. When testing your wiring or verifying that your new 90W ballast is firing up correctly, never plug the electrical cord in while the bulb is sitting exposed on your workbench. The high-output germicidal light emitted by this lamp outputs high-frequency shortwave UVC radiation. Looking directly at this raw light beam for even a few seconds can cause immediate and severe ocular burns, retinal damage, and painful skin irritation. Always make sure the lamp is fully inserted and sealed inside the black polymer vessel before restoring electrical power.
