    • Genuine OEM Direct Replacement: Authentic factory-spec open-flow intake screen basket engineered explicitly to mask the threaded wet-end suction ports of mid-frame and extra-large Reef Octopus controllable DC return pumps.
    • Cross-Platform System Alignment: Features a native 1.25-inch female straight-threaded union receiver pattern that natively matches multiple pump generations.
    • Anti-Vortex Hydrodynamic Slotting: Patterned with longitudinal bypass windows that cleanly draw in bulk water volumes from 360 degrees while diffusing rotational intake vortex suction lines.
    • Rigid Injection-Molded PVC Build: Fabricated from solid, non-reactive black marine polymer engineered to withstand physical impact shocks and constant submersed wear without stress cracking.
    • Toolless Thread-On Mechanical Security: Spun directly onto your primary pump volute cover face or union adapter by hand, dropping the need for metal fasteners or loose locking collars.
    • Vital In-Sump Invertebrate Safeguard: Provides a rigid physical perimeter defense that keeps snails, hermit crabs, errant bubble wrap, or macroalgae from migrating directly into fast-spinning impellers.

Reef Octopus VarioS & RODC Replacement Intake Strainer (ROP-VAR468-STNR)

The Reef Octopus VarioS & RODC Pump Protective Intake Strainer (SKU: ROP-VAR468-STNR) is an authentic original factory replacement wet-end protective screen distributed by CoralVue to preserve high-velocity system turnover, preserve internal balance, and shield your drive core from unexpected mechanical lockouts. When a high-volume DC water pump runs submerged inside a standard filter sump or open livestock vat, its localized intake vacuum pulls water with considerable force. Without a specialized safety guard in place, loose debris or wandering livestock will instantly get sucked into the volute nozzle. This original factory strainer acts as a tough safety shield, filtering out larger objects while keeping a clean, open path for the water to pass through safely.

Constructed from dense, chemical-inert black PVC polymer, this intake basket stands up to continuous submersed environments without breaking down or leaching compounds. The internal structural threads match up perfectly with the native intake union connections on both legacy RODC engines and modern VarioS return lines. By spreading out the incoming suction across a spaced 360-degree matrix of slotted intake windows, this strainer prevents single-point bottlenecks and minimizes surface vortex dimpling. This reduces unwanted air ingestion and keeps your filtration loop whisper-quiet. Keeping this screen installed keeps your system safe from premature impeller shearing, broken ceramic axles, and sudden electrical motor blockages.

    Key Features

    • High-Surface Slotted Profile: Maximizes total cross-sectional fluid intake area to prevent pump cavitation or pressure straining under high-velocity flow settings.

    • Marine Organism Exclusion Matrix: Keeps curious sump-dwelling organisms like astrea snails, micro-hermits, or loose macroalgae from getting pulled into the impeller well.

    • Low-Profile Structural Footprint: Seamless cylindrical format minimizes the overall spatial dimensions of your wet-end pump, ensuring a direct drop-in fit inside space-limited sump baffle zones.

    • (Note: This replacement hardware includes the single threaded black plastic intake screen block only. Main pump motor stators, separate smooth water impellers, rubber sealing gaskets, and plumbing union collars are sold separately).

    Verified Hardware Compatibility

    • Reef Octopus VarioS Circulation Pumps: Native matching replacement screen for the VarioS-4, VarioS-6, and VarioS-8 Controllable Water Pumps.

    • Reef Octopus Legacy RODC Series: Fits the classic RODC-3500 and RODC-5500 Controllable Return Pumps.

    • (Note: This component is explicitly built for return/circulation configurations. It is not compatible with specialized VarioS-S needlewheel protein skimmer pumps, which rely on open air-intake venturi nozzles to draw in atmospheric lines).

    What’s Included:

    • (1) Reef Octopus Replacement VarioS / RODC Threaded Black Protective Intake Strainer Screen

    • (Note: Primary pump volute faceplates, plumbing unions, matching sealing O-rings, and motor bodies are sold separately).

    Technical Specs:

    • Official Manufacturing Title: Reef Octopus VarioS / RODC Intake Strainer (4/6/8/3500/5500)

    • SKU / Factory Part Identifier: ROP-VAR468-STNR

    • Internal Connecting Thread Diameter: 1.25-Inch Female Straight Thread Profile

    • Material Matrix Composition: High-Impact Rigid Corrosion-Inert Black PVC Plastic

    • Primary Function: Impeller Debris Protection, Vortex Mitigation, & Livestock Exclusion

    1. Disconnect your variable-speed pump controller and pull the primary 24V/36V power adapter plug from the wall to safely kill all live electricity before handling the unit.
    2. Lift your return pump out of the sump chamber onto a clean towel to give yourself a clear view of the front wet-end wet-well.
    3. Clean away any existing hair algae, calcified salt creep, or loose filter sock strings built up around the front threads of your volute cover nozzle.
    4. Take your fresh ROP-VAR468-STNR intake strainer, align the female back-threads square over the pump’s front inlet nozzle, and gently spin it clockwise.
    5. Hand-tighten the basket smoothly until it seats flush against the volute shoulder. Caution: Avoid cross-threading the plastic lines or using tools like wrenches, which can easily crack the polymer frame.
    6. Place the pump back into your sump reservoir, double-check that your plumbing line unions are snug, and restore electrical power to resume your system turnover.

    Pro Tips:

    • Brush Off Accumulated Sump Detritus During Bi-Weekly Maintenance. Because return pumps continuously pull a heavy, high-volume draft from the final chamber of your sump, lightweight floating debris—like loose macroalgae strands, carbon bag strings, or shedding filter sock fibers—will naturally collect on the exterior surfaces of this screen over time. If this buildup is left unchecked, it will slowly starve the pump's intake, causing performance losses and motor strain. Simply take a clean, stiff-bristled toothbrush and brush the slotted windows clean every couple of weeks to keep your flow rates perfectly optimized.
    • Never Operate Your Main Return Loop Externally with This Strainer. This specific black PVC basket is engineered explicitly for submerged, in-sump use where it can freely draw from the surrounding water column. If you choose to configure your VarioS or RODC pump externally (dry plumbing outside of the sump wall), this strainer cannot be used to connect your piping. For dry external setups, you must completely remove this strainer and use the factory-included 1.25-inch slip PVC union connections instead to hard-plumb your intake line directly to a bulkheaded reservoir port.
    • Soak the Guard in Citric Acid to Dissolve Stubborn Calcium Carbonate Scaling. In high-evaporation areas or systems running heavy kalkwasser top-offs, hard calcium carbonate scale will naturally bake onto the intake guard over time. This white crust can eventually block the fine slotted windows, restricting your flow. Do not attempt to scrape or pick the scale off with sharp tools, which can slip and gouge the plastic walls. Instead, unthread the strainer and drop it into a warm bath of fresh water mixed with citric acid powder for 20 minutes to completely dissolve the mineral scale safely.
