The IceCap OVP skimmers come nearly preassembled. Here is a quick overview of how to properly assemble and operate your new IceCap OVP in-sump protein skimmer:
Loosen the four thumbscrews at the base of the skimmer body enough to turn the body counterclockwise and lift off its base.
The pinwheel pump comes installed to the OVP volute. Before installing the pump we must insert the airline tubing into the hole on the side of the volute and insert it over barb on the air intake/venturi. The venturi can be removed for easier airline installation, just be sure to insert it back in the proper orientation with the smooth inner taper facing outwards from the pump.
Mount the skimmer pump with the blank tabat the base of the volute facing the output valve and secure in place using the supplied screws. Be sure not to overtighten the screws.
Run the airline through the hole on the side of the skimmer body and run the pumps' power chord into the slot located at the base of the skimmer.
Place the skimmer body back on base with the hole aligning with the pump intake and rotate clockwise. Gently tighten screws to lock the skimmer body to the base. Attach the other end of the airline to the air silencer incorporated at the neck of the skimmer.
Carefully place assembled skimmer without the collection cup in the sump at the appropriate water level for your skimmer model. Make sure the output control valve is completely open by rotating the handle counterclockwise. Place the skimmer cup with lid onto the neck of the skimmer body and push it down to seat.
The Power Supply is not waterproof and should never be mounted over water. Do not submerge the power supply in water or bury where heat and moisture can be retained. With the convenient mounting clip on the top of the power supply and a screw or cup hook (not included), mount the power supply out of the way but within range of the skimmer itself. Be sure proper drip loops are in place to prevent water from traveling to the controller or power supply. Attach the pump and power supply to the appropriate connections on the controller.
With the skimmer output completely open, start the pump by hitting the power button on the controller. Observe the height of the water level and adjust accordingly so that it doesn't overflow by using the power settings on the controller.
Now that the skimmer is properly installed and running, You should allow the skimmer to break in for a minimum of 2 weeks. During this initial break-in period, water will slowly wash off all inert oils that come directly from factory handling as well as coat the inner walls of the skimmer with live bacteria. Be sure to leave the skimmer valve mostly open (Turned all the way counterclockwise) during this period and do not attempt to tune the skimmer, doing so too early may result in inconsistent performance and possible overflow.
Once the break-in period has passed, you can tune the skimmer to your aquarium by simply turning the output valve clockwise until you obtain pea-size bubbles at the point where the collection cup meets the skimmer body. Allow the skimmer to acclimate to the new setting for 24 hours before making further adjustments. The more you close the output valve, the wetter the collection will become. Excess air exiting the output of the skimmer is normal and will dissipate as the skimmer breaks in.
