Reef Octopus Essence-130 Internal Protein Skimmer

The Reef Octopus Essence S-130 is a masterclass in efficient, user-centric filtration design. Built for the modern reef hobbyist, this internal protein skimmer combines a small physical footprint with the heavy-duty organic export capabilities typically found in much larger units. At its core is the reliable Aquatrance 1800s pinwheel pump, specifically engineered to create a dense mixture of micro-bubbles for maximum protein binding and water oxygenation.

What sets the Essence S-130 apart is its focus on ease of maintenance and silent operation. The unit features a unique twist-lock collection cup that eliminates the struggle of traditional friction-fit necks. A modular design allows the skimmer to be completely disassembled for deep cleaning in minutes. With integrated noise-dampening feet and a specialized air silencer, the S-130 remains nearly whisper-quiet, making it an ideal choice for aquariums located in living areas or bedrooms.

Key Features

• Space-Saving Footprint: The "pump-inside" design maximizes reaction volume while minimizing the base size.
• Twist-Lock Cup: Provides a secure, leak-proof seal that is easy to remove even with wet hands.
• Precision Water Control: A 16-step adjustment dial allows you to fine-tune the internal water level for dry or wet skimming.
• Quiet Performance: Includes a high-performance silencer and vibration-absorbing rubber feet.
• High-Quality Build: Constructed from solid cast acrylic and PVC for long-term durability in saltwater.

Ideal For

• Small to Mid-Sized Reefs: Rated for aquariums from 60 to 160 gallons, depending on bioload.
• Compact Sumps: Perfect for hobbyists using small modular sumps.
• Noise-Sensitive Environments: Designed for users who demand a silent filtration system.
• Maintenance-Minded Users: Those who want a skimmer that is easy to take apart and clean regularly.

What's Included:
• Essence S-130 Skimmer Body
• Aquatrance 1800s Pinwheel Pump
• Twist-Lock Collection Cup
• Air Silencer and Tubing

Bioload Handling:
HEAVY: 75 Gallons  |  MEDIUM: 120 Gallons  |  LIGHT: 160 Gallons

The bioload of an aquarium refers to its ability to process waste in proportion to tank volume. Protein skimmers work best when properly matched to the system's bioload. (EXCLUDING SUMP) The use of fleece-style prefilters drastically reduces the bioload available to the protein skimmer.

  1. Place the Essence 130 in your sump, ensuring the water level is between 7 and 8 inches.
  2. Connect the air intake tubing to the silencer and the pump venturi.
  3. Plug in the Aquatrance pump; the skimmer may require a 24–48 hour "break-in" period.
  4. Use the 16-step adjustment dial to raise or lower the internal water level until bubbles reach the base of the cup neck.
  5. Empty the collection cup regularly and wipe the internal neck to maintain maximum efficiency.

Pro Tips:
Target the 7.5-inch water depth.
While the skimmer works in 7–8 inches of water, we have found that 7.5 inches is the "sweet spot" for the Essence 130 to achieve the most stable foam head.

Clean the venturi monthly. Calcium and salt creep can build up inside the small air intake nozzle on the pump. Every 4 weeks, dip the air hose in a cup of RO/DI water while the pump is running to help dissolve any minor clogs.

The "Twist" is key. When reinstalling the collection cup, ensure the O-ring is clean and lightly moistened. This ensures the twist-lock mechanism glides smoothly and creates a perfect airtight seal.
