- Ensure both 90mm metric pipe ends are cut perfectly square and thoroughly deburred.
- Important: Disassemble the union and slide the threaded collar over one pipe end before gluing the tailpiece.
- Clean the pipe ends and the internal sockets of both tailpieces with a dedicated PVC cleaner.
- Apply a generous layer of PVC primer and heavy-duty solvent cement to the pipe ends and tailpiece sockets.
- Push the tailpieces onto the pipes until they seat fully. Hold for at least 60 seconds.
- Once the glue has cured, ensure the O-ring is seated cleanly in its groove and free of debris.
- Align the two tailpieces and thread the collar onto the opposite side, tightening by hand until firm.
Pro Tips:
- Metric vs. Standard. A 90mm metric union will not fit standard US 3-inch or 4-inch pipe. 90mm is approximately 3.54 inches, while US 3-inch pipe is 3.5 inches OD and US 4-inch pipe is 4.5 inches OD. Always verify your pipe size with a caliper before beginning a permanent installation.
- O-Ring Maintenance. On large-diameter unions, salt crystals can sometimes build up in the threads. Apply a small amount of food-grade silicone grease to the O-ring and the collar threads. This ensures the union remains easy to break down by hand even after years of saltwater exposure.
- Hand Tighten Only. Even at 90mm, these unions are designed to be hand-tightened. Using large pipe wrenches can crack the UPVC collar or distort the O-ring seal. If a leak persists while hand-tight, check the O-ring for alignment or trapped debris.
