- Shut down your central aquarium return pump or the dedicated feed line supplying your inline UV bypass circuit. Close upstream and downstream ball valves to isolate the unit, and drain the water column completely.
- Unthread the large threaded union nuts counter-clockwise on both the intake and discharge ports of your UV sterilizer vessel to break the plumbing connection lines.
- Pull the plumbing tail pieces away from the body and locate the old, compressed, or flattened O-rings sitting inside the recessed face grooves.
- Carefully pick the old seals out of their tracking channels using your fingers or a dull plastic tool. Warning: Never use sharp metal screwdrivers or razor blades, as you can scratch the plastic tracking groove and create a permanent leak path.
- Wipe the internal channel track clean with a soft rag dipped in warm fresh water to remove any built-up organic slime or calcified salt creep.
- Take your fresh IP-UV-ORING seals, push them firmly and evenly into the round tracking tracks of both ports, align your plumbing lines straight, and thread the union collars back down clockwise until hand-tight.
Pro Tips:
- Always Use a Light Coat of Reef-Safe Silicone Grease to Prevent Friction Binding. When seating your fresh IP-UV-ORING gaskets into your plumbing tails, always apply a paper-thin film of 100% pure, reef-safe silicone grease across the rubber surface. Tightening down dry union collars onto a dry rubber ring can cause the plastic to grip the gasket unevenly, forcing the rubber to twist, bunch up, or roll out of its track during assembly. A rolled or pinched O-ring creates a microscopic gap that will cause an active trace leak the second your system is re-pressurized.
- Never Use Hand Tools or Wrenches to Secure Your Quick-Disconnect Union Collars. When reconnecting your plumbing adapters back onto the threaded ports over your fresh union O-rings, always tighten the plastic union nuts entirely by hand. Never use plumbing wrenches, channel locks, or strap pliers. The supple rubber material is engineered to seal perfectly under minimal hand compression. Overtightening the collar with a tool will over-compress and split the gasket inside, or strip the plastic threads completely off your housing vessel, destroying the unit.
- Wipe the Recessed Union Tracks Clean of Dried Salt Creep During Every Teardown.
