- Ensure both 50mm metric pipe ends are cut perfectly square and thoroughly deburred.
- Clean the pipe ends and the internal sockets of the coupling with a dedicated PVC cleaner.
- Apply a layer of PVC primer to both the pipe ends and the inside of the coupling to soften the material.
- Apply a liberal coat of heavy-duty PVC solvent cement to both the pipe and the coupling sockets.
- Push the pipes into the coupling until they hit the center stop, giving a slight quarter-turn to ensure even glue distribution.
- Hold firmly for 45–60 seconds. Allow at least 6 hours to cure before introducing high-pressure water.
Pro Tips:
- Metric vs. Standard 2-Inch. A 50mm metric coupling will not fit standard US 2-inch pipe. 50mm is approximately 1.97 inches, whereas standard US 2-inch pipe has a 2.375-inch OD. Always confirm your pipe diameter with a caliper before beginning a permanent solvent weld.
- Don't Skimp on Primer. On 50mm and larger pipes, the surface area is vast. Proper priming is essential to ensure the solvent cement can create a true "chemical weld." Use clear primer to keep the joint looking clean and professional.
- The Union Alternative. If you are repairing a 50mm line that is rigid and cannot be pulled apart, a standard coupling is almost impossible to install. In these cases, use a 50mm Metric Union which allows you to drop the repair piece into place and tighten the collar.
