Reef Octopus VarioS CR200 8-inch Calcium Reactor

The Reef Octopus VarioS CR200 (OCT-CALR200) is a high-performance solution for aquarists looking to automate the complex task of maintaining alkalinity, calcium, and essential trace elements. Quality, modern design, and DC controllability define the VarioS series, making it a premier choice for demanding reef systems. Unlike traditional AC-powered reactors, the CR200 uses the variable-speed VarioS-4 pump, allowing users to fine-tune the recirculation rate for optimal media dissolution.

The reactor employs a sophisticated reverse-flow design, forcing water upward through the media to maximize contact time and prevent "channeling" or dead spots. This ensures that every ounce of aragonite media is utilized effectively. With its built-in CO2 recirculating feature, the CR200 recovers unused gas to increase efficiency and lower the overall pH within the chamber more effectively. The unit is thoughtfully designed with a precision effluent control valve and quick-connect fittings, simplifying the setup and tuning process for consistent daily mineral delivery.

Key Features:

  • Controllable VarioS DC Pump: Offers variable speed settings, a feed mode, and high-efficiency performance with a 5-year warranty.
  • Reverse Flow Design: Maximizes water-to-media contact while ensuring even dissolution of the aragonite.
  • Comprehensive CO2 Tools: Includes a built-in bubble counter and a dedicated pH probe holder (probe sold separately) for total chamber monitoring.
  • Auto Fill Feature: Integrated bubble counter and gas recovery system reduce CO2 waste.
  • Durable Construction: Built with solid cast acrylic and 1/4" quick-connect fittings for a leak-proof experience.
  • Easy Access Lid: Designed for simple media refills and routine chamber maintenance.

Ideal For:

  • High-Demand SPS Tanks: Perfect for systems requiring high amounts of calcium and carbonate.
  • Medium to Large Reefs: Rated for systems between 300 and 500 gallons, depending on bioload.
  • Tech-Forward Hobbyists: Those who prefer the quiet operation and micro-adjustability of DC-powered equipment.
  • Minimalist Sump Spaces: Compact footprint considering its high media capacity.

This Standard Limited Warranty applies and is limited as follows:

  • To the product only as long as it remains in the possession of the original purchaser.
  • To the product that has not been subject to accident, misuse or abuse.
  • To the product that has not been modified, altered, defaced, or had repairs made or attempted by other than CoralVue, Inc.
  • That CoralVue be immediately notified in writing within ten (10) days of first knowledge of defect by owner or his agent.
  • That CoralVue, Inc. shall be given first opportunity to make any repairs, replacements or corrections to the defective construction within a reasonable period of time.

Instructions:

  1. Fill the reactor chamber with high-quality aragonite media and rinse thoroughly.
  2. Secure the pH probe (optional) into the probe holder and tighten the gland.
  3. Connect your feed pump to the 1/4" inlet, ensuring the feed pressure is slightly higher than the influent flow.
  4. Connect the CO2 line to the bubble counter and set a slow initial drip rate.
  5. Power on the VarioS pump and use the controller to set the desired recirculation speed.
  6. Use the precision effluent valve to adjust the output flow until your desired alkalinity levels are stabilized in the aquarium.

Pro Tips:

  • Choose the Right Feed Pump. The CR200 performs best when fed with a consistent pressure. Use a dedicated small pump or a manifold feed with a flow rate between 130–200 GPH to ensure the reactor remains pressurized and free of air pockets.
  • Monitor Your pH. For maximum stability, use a pH controller to manage your CO2 solenoid. Maintaining a pH of 6.5–6.7 inside the chamber is generally the "sweet spot" for dissolving aragonite media without turning it into "mush".
  • Don't Forget the Rinse. When adding new media, always rinse it in a bucket of RO/DI water first. Fine dust from unrinsed media can clog the recirculation pump impeller or the effluent valve, leading to inconsistent performance.
