Emptying a high-volume protein skimmer collection cup daily can quickly become a tedious chore, and allowing full cups to back up creates risk of oily skimmate spilling over the neck back into the aquarium water column. While Reef Octopus equips its collection cups with dedicated drain fittings to allow continuous drainage into external containers, standard aquarium tubing rarely provides a proper fit—either slipping loose and leaking foul waste onto stand floors, or kinking shut and backing up the skimmer. The Octo Drain Tubing 15/32" ID (SKU: ROP-TUBE-1532) is the genuine OEM replacement drain line engineered to service all Reef Octopus Protein Skimmers featuring a cup drain.
Standardized across the entire Reef Octopus product line, this 15/32-inch (~12mm) internal diameter tubing slides directly over the standard barbed drain ports and mini shut-off ball valves found on all Reef Octopus collection cups. Crafted from high-grade, flexible marine polymer, ROP-TUBE-1532 withstands continuous contact with concentrated fatty acids, proteins, and biological sludge that would otherwise degrade and embrittle standard clear vinyl hose. Its heavy-wall design ensures unobstructed gravity drainage around tight sump corners, giving aquarists peace of mind during extended periods away from the aquarium.

Installation & Maintenance Guidelines:
Turn off power to the skimmer pump and ensure the collection cup drain valve is closed before handling.
Carefully pull the aged, hardened, or discolored drain hose off the collection cup drain barb or ball valve.
Clean any dried skimmate crust or salt residue from the barbed fitting using warm tap water and a soft towel.
Cut the ROP-TUBE-1532 to your required length with a sharp utility knife, ensuring enough slack to avoid tension while maintaining a continuous downward slope.
Push the tubing firmly onto the cup drain fitting until it seats completely against the barb shoulder.
Route the opposite end into your external waste collector or skimmate container, securing it firmly so it cannot shift or splash.
Open the collection cup drain valve and power on the skimmer pump to confirm smooth, unobstructed gravity drainage.
Pro Tips:
- Maintain a Continuous Downward Slope to Prevent Airlocks. Because skimmate is dense and contains organic surfactants, any low-hanging "P-trap" sag in the drain line can trap standing fluid. This standing liquid creates an airlock that blocks new waste from exiting the cup, forcing skimmate to rise up the neck and overflow. Always trim the ROP-TUBE-1532 so that it slopes continuously downward from the cup barb straight into your waste container.
- Flush the Drain Line Monthly with Hot RO/DI Water. Organic sludge, bacterial slime, and fats naturally build up along the inside walls of skimmate drain tubing, eventually narrowing the flow path and creating foul odors. During your regular cup cleaning routine, leave the tubing attached, open the drain valve, and pour a cup of hot RO/DI water directly through the collection cup drain basin. This flushes out clinging residue and keeps the drain line free-flowing.
