IceCap Large PRO Internal In-Sump Algae Turf Scrubber (IC-AGS-400PRO)

The IceCap Large PRO In-Sump Algae Turf Scrubber (SKU: IC-AGS-400PRO) is an authentic, original factory-spec natural biological filtration chamber distributed by CoralVue to provide aggressive nutrient uptake on heavily loaded marine reef systems up to 350 gallons. In standard aquarium environments, floating fish waste, organic byproducts, and decaying foods lead to a persistent accumulation of inorganic nitrates and orthophosphates. Rather than utilizing chemical resins, synthetic media blocks, or carbon dosing systems that can destabilize delicate biological lines, the IC-AGS-400PRO harnesses natural photosynthesis. By providing a highly illuminated, oxygen-rich localized growth matrix, it isolates nuisance hair and film algae inside the reactor box rather than over your display coral rockwork.

Operation is self-contained and highly efficient. The included heavy-duty IceCap EVO-2000 utility pump sits submerged next to the scrubber base, lifting raw water straight into the internal spray bar manifold. This water cascades smoothly down an oversized 15.8 by 10.5-inch laser-roughened growing mesh screen. As the water sheets over the grid, it is blasted from both sides by integrated full-spectrum pink/red grow lights. The growing algae acts like an organic sponge, locking up unwanted dissolved nutrients inside its biomass. Scraping the sheet clean every 1 to 3 weeks permanently removes these bound pollutants from your system loop, reducing your dependency on intensive, time-consuming water changes.

Key Features

  • Mitigates Daily pH Fluctuations: When programmed to run on a reverse photoperiod opposite your display lights, the algae's overnight photosynthesis consumes carbon dioxide, preventing morning pH drops.

  • Heavily Textured Grow Grid Mesh: Custom laser-scored surface profile provides an optimized anchoring foundation for hair algae filaments to grip, resisting washouts under high flow.

  • Multi-Directional Input Controls: Outfitted with a high-flow multi-stage inlet ball valve assembly to perfectly govern water sheet consistency across the screen faceplate.

  • (Note: This internal system is designed for submerged deployment inside a sump chamber only. It includes the heavy cell-cast acrylic reactor housing, internal mesh grid, dual 15W LED strips, 24V DC power transformer, and an EVO-2000 feed pump).

  1. Unpack your IC-AGS-400PRO housing, pull off the opaque protective top cover, and verify that the internal spray bar assembly sits flat inside the vertical side alignment guides.
  2. Place the scrubber base flat inside your sump's designated mechanical or filtration chamber, ensuring the open lower drain slots sit away from the sump partition walls.
  3. Loosen the side bracket thumb sliders to raise or lower the main housing frame until the lower water exit ports sit partly submerged in your sump water line (ideal depth: 4 to 10 inches).
  4. Submerge the included EVO-2000 water feed pump completely into the sump floor, linking its vinyl outlet tube directly into the scrubber’s multi-directional input ball valve.
  5. Open the input ball valve fully and plug in the EVO-2000 pump to flood the internal spray bar, adjusting the valve until a smooth, unbroken sheet of water trickles down the entire mesh screen.
  6. Connect the 24V DC light power cord to an external timer programmed for a 12-hour daily photoperiod—ideally scheduled on a reverse cycle opposite your display tank lighting.

Pro Tips:

  • Never Scrape the Mesh Growing Screen Completely Bare During a Harvest. When pulling the textured screen out every few weeks to scrape away mature algae mats in your sink, avoid using aggressive metal wire brushes or boiling water to sanitize the mesh. If you clean the plastic screen down to a completely bare surface, you eliminate the underlying "seed" population. This forces the system to restart the growth cycle from scratch, adding 7 to 10 days to your next harvest window. Instead, use an old credit card or a plastic scraper to remove the heavy clumps, leaving a thin, translucent layer of green film behind to kickstart immediate regrowth.
  • Verify That the Spray Bar Slot Stays Clear of Loose Algae Strands Weekly. Because water is pumped directly through a narrow longitudinal slot cut into the horizontal PVC spray bar, fast-growing turf algae will occasionally creep upward and grow into the supply slot. If these strands clog the opening, water will start spraying sideways against the top lid rather than flowing smoothly down the screen. This can cause salt creep or small leaks around the box lid. Make it a habit to quickly peek into the open spray chamber once a week, clearing out any stray algae blocks with a plastic toothpick.
  • Allow Up to 3 Full Weeks for the First Active Green Algae Pad to Establish. When first firing up a brand-new IC-AGS-400PRO, do not expect a thick, lush green carpet of turf algae to appear within the first 48 hours. The screen must transition through a natural ecological progression. During the first 7 to 10 days, the mesh will typically populate with a slick, golden-brown layer of diatoms and light organic film. This brown coating provides the ideal anchoring foundation for true green hair algae filaments. By week 3, the green turf mat will take hold and begin aggressively pulling down your nutrient levels.
