Reef Octopus Super Reef SRO 8000ext Light Commercial Protein Skimmer (SRO-8000EXT)

The Reef Octopus Super Reef SRO 8000ext Light Commercial Protein Skimmer (SKU: SRO-8000EXT) is a high-volume, out-of-sump organic extraction system distributed by CoralVue to deliver robust, uninterrupted nutrient purification for large marine displays, multitrack coral holding arrays, and light commercial aquaculture systems up to 1,000 gallons. In setups of this magnitude, fluctuating water levels, microbubble bypass, and space limitations make standard in-sump skimmers impractical. The SRO-8000EXT solves this by running on a completely independent, pressure-sealed external recirculating loop. This ensures that the water-shredding column inside remains unaffected by the main filtration basin's daily evaporation cycles or shared partition currents.

At the core of this heavy-duty waste processor is a specialized, high-volume Bubble Blaster fractionating pump. Engineered from the ground up to draw massive air volumes rather than standard clean water, the pump uses an ultra-hard Silicon Nitride digital control rotor running inside a clear volute casing. It aggressively chops incoming atmospheric air into a highly uniform cloud of microbubbles, which are forced through a wide lower distribution plate. This process neutralizes directional tracking turbulence inside the wide 16-inch lower body. The massive bubble surface area binds tightly to dissolved proteins, amino acids, and organic compounds, smoothly carrying them up the tapering hybrid neck and out of the active water loop before they can degrade system parameters.

Key Features

  • Uncompromising Contact Time: Recirculating layout allows users to govern system turnover independently by utilizing a dedicated feed line or localized utility loop manifold.

  • Digital Circuit Motor Protection: The integrated smart stator check monitors electrical draw in real time, automatically shutting off the power grid if a physical obstruction binds the needlewheel array.

  • Oversized Structural Air Silencer: High-capacity dual-chamber noise reduction cylinder eliminates vacuum suction hiss, maintaining a quiet environment in your fish room.

  • (Note: This light commercial skimmer is an external, un-submerged system that requires a separate feed pump or dedicated system manifold piping supplying between 1,500 and 2,200 GPH of raw water).

Verified System Load Ratings

  • Heavy Bioload Environments: Rated for heavily populated coral reef systems up to 700 Gallons.

  • Medium Bioload Environments: Rated for standard mixed reef or community marine setups up to 850 Gallons.

  • Light Bioload Environments: Rated for sparsely populated layouts or ultra-low nutrient configurations up to 1,000 Gallons.

  1. Situate the SRO-8000EXT on a flat, level, and structurally reinforced floor surface next to your sump reservoir or inside a dedicated dry plumbing closet.
  2. Hard-plumb your separate feed pump or utility manifold line directly to the 1-inch plumbing intake bulkhead located on the lower body square box rim.
  3. Glue your 2-inch output plumbing line together, making sure the open-top non-siphon vertical pipe points straight up to prevent air-locking and backpressure fluctuations.
  4. Route the final return pipe discharge down into your sump, placing the pipe exit roughly 1 inch below the standard water line to eliminate splashing noise.
  5. Activate your primary system feed line first to fill the wide 16-inch skimmer cylinder with water before turning on the fractionating pump loop. Warning: Powering the main pump dry will melt internal bearings.

Once a continuous stream of water flows out of the discharge pipe, power up your skimmer pump, and rotate the output wedge valve to position your active foam line 3 inches below the neck ring.Pro Tips:

  • Flush the Air Venturi Ports with Fresh Water Weekly. Because this light commercial system pulls immense air volumes directly into a high-salinity water column, salt spray and mineral evaporation will steadily build up a hard crust inside the internal venturi injection paths. This mineral scaling chokes off incoming air, causing the water level inside the skimmer to rise aggressively and flood the collection cup. To prevent this, simply pull 1 to 2 cups of hot fresh water through the silicone air intake line once a week while the pump is running to safely dissolve any salt crust.
  • Always Use 316 Stainless Steel Core Fasteners for External Assemblies. SRO-8000EXT skimmers are frequently deployed in large aquaculture facilities or dedicated fish rooms where ambient humidity and airborne salt creep are exceptionally high. When securing external support brackets or adjoining electronics panels near the skimmer base, skip standard construction screws or low-grade fasteners. Always use marine-grade 316 stainless steel hardware to prevent rapid rust corrosion and structural tracking streaks across your equipment boards.
  • Verify All Union Seals are Seated Correctly Post-Cleaning. During seasonal teardowns or routine maintenance flushes of the lower mixing base, the large rubber compression gaskets inside the plumbing unions can occasionally slip out of their tracking channels. Screwing a hard PVC union ring down over a twisted or off-center gasket will cause a slow, steady leak under pressure. Always inspect the union groove visually to confirm the rubber sits completely flat before tightening the collar down hand-tight.
