Reef Octopus Classic CR-140 Calcium Reactor

The Reef Octopus Classic CR-140 (SKU: OCT-CR140) is an automated, highly efficient aragonite-dissolving reactor system designed to stabilize and supplement calcium, alkalinity, and essential trace elements in marine reef aquariums up to 200 gallons. Maintaining optimal ionic balance manually becomes a grueling task as hard stony corals (SPS and LPS) mature and expand. The CR-140 replaces the volatility of multi-part daily liquid dosing by using pressurized carbon dioxide (CO2) to safely drop the internal chamber pH, melting crushed ancient coral skeletons back into their raw, bio-available mineral states.

Constructed from premium, heavy-duty cast acrylic, the CR-140 relies on an advanced reverse-flow fluid layout. The integrated Aquatrance 2000 recirculation pump continuously pushes acidic water from the bottom of the 5.5-inch chamber upward. This configuration ensures that the CO2 gas remains completely dissolved and distributed, maximizing contact time with the aragonite media while preventing the substrate from packing together into a solid brick. Complete with a modular screw-off lid, a functional bubble counter, and an integrated probe holder, this compact workhorse is the definitive upgrade for low-maintenance coral growth.

Key Features

  • Automated Skeletal Supplementation: Provides balanced ratios of calcium, carbonate hardness, strontium, and magnesium simultaneously.

  • Aquatrance 2000 Recirculation: Keeps the internal water loop moving consistently to eliminate dead zones inside the media column.

  • Recirculating CO2 Geometry: Recycles unused gas pockets trapped inside the upper neck, minimizing overall CO2 bottle consumption.

  • Probe Integration Ready: Port allows a standalone pH monitor or controller probe to monitor internal levels without risking leaks.

  • Effortless Plumbing Taps: Employs industrial-grade 1/4-inch push-connect fittings for precise incoming feed and outgoing effluent tracking.

  1. Unscrew the top thumb-locking flange screws and remove the main lid from the 5.5-inch acrylic cylinder.
  2. Rinse your preferred coarse calcium reactor aragonite media thoroughly to wash out dust, then add it to the chamber above the lower foam screen plate.
  3. Re-seat the top lid flange, verifying that the central silicone O-ring is perfectly aligned, and tighten down the thumb screws evenly.
  4. Insert your specialized aquarium controller pH probe into the designated holder port and tighten the compression nut to lock it down.
  5. Plumb your 1/4-inch incoming water feed line (from a dedicated feed pump or aquarium manifold) and your CO2 gas source to their respective ports.
  6. Fill the internal chamber completely with tank water, turn on your effluent feed pump, and plug the Aquatrance 2000 recirculation pump into a GFCI outlet.

Pro Tips:

  • Coarse Media is Mandatory. Always utilize a high-quality, large-grain coarse aragonite media (such as large coral bones or premium coarse chips) inside the CR-140. Fine or small-grained media will quickly break down into a fine mud under the acidic conditions, restricting flow through the reverse-plumbed base and potentially choking the Aquatrance impeller.
  • Automate the Gas Injection. While you can manage a calcium reactor manually by monitoring the drip rate, we highly advocate plugging your CO2 regulator solenoid into an electronic controller or pH controller. Program the solenoid to close if the internal chamber pH falls beneath 6.5, preventing the media from over-dissolving into mud during a system anomaly.
  • Effluent Line Scaling. The tiny effluent discharge line can slowly collect calcium carbonate deposits over time, which narrows the output path and stalls the incoming feed water flow. Check your effluent drip rate weekly, and blow a light push of warm RO/DI water or weak vinegar solution through the line every few months to keep the pathway completely free of crust.
