IceCap 50 PRO Hang-On Back Turf Scrubber

The IceCap 50 PRO Hang-On Back Turf Scrubber is an authentic, original factory-spec natural filtration system distributed by CoralVue to lower organic nitrates and phosphates using natural biological absorption. For many marine and freshwater aquarists, running a dedicated macroalgae refugium is impossible due to space constraints or the lack of an under-cabinet sump. The IC-AGS-50PRO bypasses these limitations by packing high-capacity turf algae scrubbers into a compact, rim-mounted profile. By forcing your water column to pass directly over a targeted, highly illuminated growth matrix, the scrubber causes hair algae, film algae, and organic compounds to grow inside the box rather than over your decorative display rockwork.

Operation is straightforward and efficient: the bundled IceCap EVO-400 utility pump sits submerged inside the tank, delivering up to 105 GPH of water directly into the scrubber's internal spray bar. This water trickles down a heavily textured, laser-roughened mesh growing screen that is lit from both sides by high-efficiency photoperiod grow lights. As the algae mat matures, it acts like a sponge, pulling dissolved inorganic nitrogen and orthophosphates straight out of the water column. Scraping the screen clean every 1 to 3 weeks permanently extracts these bound pollutants from your system. This significantly reduces your dependency on artificial chemical resins and frequent, labor-intensive water changes.

Key Features:

  • Stabilizes Daily pH Fluctuations: When programmed to run on a reverse photoperiod opposite your display lights, the algae's overnight photosynthesis consumes carbon dioxide, preventing morning pH drops.

  • Universal Rim Tracking Adjustment: Adjustable mechanical tracking brackets safely accommodate standard plastic-molded or rimless tank edges ranging from 1/4-inch to 1 3/8-inches wide.

  • Dual Emergency Overspill Tracks: Features a secondary relief pipe that handles high water levels if heavy algae growth blocks the primary drain slot, keeping your living room floor dry.

Note: This self-contained HOB assembly arrives complete with the main black polymer reactor box, internal textured mesh grid, dual 6W LED light modules, a 24V DC power transformer, and an EVO-400 pump.

Instructions:

  1. Unpack the IC-AGS-50PRO housing, pull off the top cover plate, and verify that the internal spray bar sits flat inside the side tracking slots.
  2. Hook the scrubber's rear mounting bracket over the top rim lip of your aquarium, tightening the back nylon set screws hand-tight until the box sits perfectly level against the glass back.
  3. Submerge the included EVO-400 water feed pump completely into your tank or rear overflow panel, running the soft flexible supply line straight up to the scrubber's quick-connect intake ball valve.
  4. Plug the dual-sided LED light cords into the split power harness, keeping the non-waterproof 24V adapter brick mounted completely outside your cabinet away from salt spray.
  5. Open the intake line ball valve fully and plug in the EVO-400 pump to flood the spray bar. Adjust the valve until a smooth, even sheet of water trickles down the entire mesh screen.
  6. Connect the LED lights to an external timer programmed for a 12-hour daily photoperiod—ideally scheduled on a reverse cycle opposite your display tank lighting.

Pro Tips:

  • Never Scrape the Mesh Growing Screen Completely Bare During a Harvest. When pulling the textured screen out every few weeks to scrape away mature algae mats in your sink, avoid using aggressive metal wire brushes or boiling water to sanitize the mesh. If you clean the plastic screen down to a completely bare surface, you eliminate the underlying "seed" population. This forces the system to restart the growth cycle from scratch, adding 7 to 10 days to your next harvest window. Instead, use an old credit card or a plastic scraper to remove the heavy clumps, leaving a thin, translucent layer of green film behind to kickstart immediate regrowth.
  • Verify That the Spray Bar Slot Stays Clear of Loose Algae Strands Weekly. Because water is pumped directly through a narrow longitudinal slot cut into the horizontal PVC spray bar, fast-growing turf algae will occasionally creep upward and grow into the supply slot. If these strands clog the opening, water will start spraying sideways against the top lid rather than flowing smoothly down the screen. This can cause salt creep or small leaks around the box lid. Make it a habit to quickly peek into the open spray chamber once a week, clearing out any stray algae blocks with a plastic toothpick.
  • Allow Up to 3 Full Weeks for the First Active Green Algae Pad to Establish. When first firing up a brand-new IC-AGS-50PRO, do not expect a thick, lush green carpet of turf algae to appear within the first 48 hours. The screen must transition through a natural ecological progression. During the first 7 to 10 days, the mesh will typically populate with a slick, golden-brown layer of diatoms and light organic film. This brown coating provides the ideal anchoring foundation for true green hair algae filaments. By week 3, the green turf mat will take hold and begin aggressively pulling down your nutrient levels.
