IceCap Kalk Mixing Reactor Small 5" — KM-120 (IC-KM-120)
The IceCap Kalk Mixing Reactor Small (SKU: IC-KM-120) is an authentic, high-efficiency chemical water treatment system distributed by CoralVue to streamline and secure the addition of calcium hydroxide (Kalkwasser) into nano and mid-sized marine reef aquariums up to 100 gallons. Traditional kalkwasser dosing requires hobbyists to manually mix white powder into large top-off reservoirs or reservoirs. This not only consumes substantial space under the cabinet but exposes the solution to room air, where carbon dioxide immediately reacts with the lime water to form a useless calcium carbonate precipitate crust, rapidly reducing its potency. The IceCap KM-120 completely eliminates manual daily mixing by isolating the calcium hydroxide within an airtight, compact structural tower.
At the operational core of the Small Kalk Mixer is its advanced Adjustable Speed Magnetic Stirrer Motor. Standard kalk stirrers use traditional internal water pumps to mix the slurry, which quickly wear down or freeze up as calcium scales form along the impellers. The KM-120 utilizes a completely isolated external motor that drives a heavy-duty internal magnetic stir bar coated in reef-safe polymer. Hooked up to an external timer or controller, the mixer automatically turns on a few times a day to gently agitate the powder bed at the base, creating a highly concentrated, super-saturated fluid layout. When your fresh Auto Top-Off (ATO) pump pushes fresh water into the reactor base, it forces the clear, rich kalk solution out of the top gravity port and down into your sump, providing balanced calcium and alkalinity while maintaining a stable pH level of 8.3 inside your display.
Key Features
Aggressive pH and Nutrient Support: Delivers a high-pH solution that binds free phosphates while neutralizing organic CO2 inside the aquarium loop to maximize coral growth rates.
Safe, Non-Pressurized Discharging: Employs a zero-pressure gravity flow design that limits structural strain, eliminating the messy floor leaks common with pressurized filters.
Heavy-Wall Acrylic Engineering: Constructed from thick, durable clear cell-cast acrylic panels anchored securely onto a heavy, high-gloss solid PVC support plate.
(Note: This retail package includes (1) Small Kalk Mixing Reactor vessel, (1) integrated magnetic drive motor, (1) internal magnetic stir bar, (1) low-voltage power supply, and push-fit plumbing adapters. Kalkwasser powder, feed dosing pumps, and automated timers are sold under separate product categories).

This Standard Limited Warranty applies and is limited as follows:
- To the product only as long as it remains in the possession of the original purchaser.
- To the product that has not been subject to accident, misuse or abuse.
- To the product that has not been modified, altered, defaced, or had repairs made or attempted by other than CoralVue, Inc.
- That CoralVue be immediately notified in writing within ten (10) days of first knowledge of defect by owner or his agent.
- That CoralVue, Inc. shall be given first opportunity to make any repairs, replacements or corrections to the defective construction within a reasonable period of time.

- Unbox the reactor components. Inspect the clear acrylic cylinder and check that the two rubber friction bands are securely in place on your internal magnetic stir bar. Warning: Never operate the reactor without checking these friction bands, as a bare magnet can score the interior acrylic.
- Place the reactor column vertically inside a flat, dry cabinet section next to your sump. Note: Because this is a gravity-draining vessel, the upper output barb must sit physically higher than the top rim of your sump's receive section.
- Route the freshwater line from your Auto Top-Off (ATO) or standalone dosing pump into the lower 1/4-inch push-fit input port at the base of the reactor tower.
- Connect a line of 1/4-inch RO tubing to the upper gravity exit barb, and position the opposite end over a high-flow water area of your filtration sump (such as near a skimmer pump intake).
- Unscrew the quick-access top fill cap. Pour in 1/2 to 1 cup of premium calcium hydroxide powder, then secure the cap clockwise until the airtight rubber gasket forms a seal.
- Connect the magnetic drive motor to a programmable timer or aquarium controller. Configure the timer to activate the motor for 5 to 10 minutes, every 4 to 6 hours. Crucial: The mixer motor is not built for continuous runtime. Running the motor 24/7 will overheat the coils and void your factory warranty.
Pro Tips:
- Utilize a Slow-Flow Peristaltic Dosing Pump to Feed the Water Inlet Line. Kalkwasser carries an incredibly high native pH value of approximately 12.4. If your freshwater feeding system pushes water through the reactor too rapidly, it will flood your sump with a concentrated alkaline spike, causing your tank's calcium carbonate to instantly precipitate out of solution (often turning the display water a cloudy white). Feeding the reactor with a slow, controlled peristaltic dosing pump or a highly throttled, micro-ATO pump allows the concentrated fluid to drip in smoothly, keeping water chemistry stable.
- Never Allow Your Freshwater Dosing Tube to Sit Fully Submerged in Sump Water. The gravity drain line coming out of the upper port of the KM-120 must hang freely in the air, dripping down into your sump water line without making direct contact with it. If you submerge the end of the exit tube below the sump's waterline, high-pH kalk solution will mix with high-salinity marine water inside the tip of the pipe. This triggers immediate calcium scaling that will clog the 1/4-inch RO line within weeks, leading to backup overflows under your cabinet.
- Perform a Quick Internal Freshwater Flush Once Per Month. As fresh water processes through the calcium hydroxide bed, impurities and insoluble compounds will collect at the absolute bottom of the chamber as a gray, muddy precipitate sludge. To keep your solution purity high, let the powder dissolve completely over a 4-week window. Once a month, isolate the push-fit lines, carry the clear cylinder column to a sink, unscrew the base screws, and rinse the internal tracking clean with fresh water before restocking.
