Reef Octopus OCTO OS-30A Premium Acrylic Reef Sump
The Reef Octopus OCTO Sump 30 (Model No: OS-30A) is a premium, high-density acrylic filtration basin meticulously designed to bring elite organizational architecture and heavy mechanical capacity to large-scale marine reef aquariums. Standard glass aquariums partitioned with cheap silicone panels often suffer from structural shifting, dynamic baffle leaks, and uninspired layouts that cram essential gear together. The OS-30A completely reinvents the under-cabinet environment, establishing a beautiful 30-inch long command center engineered from solid machine-cut sheet acrylic that unifies your mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration networks into a single cohesive ecosystem.
Crafted by reef hobbyists for reef hobbyists, the OS-30A optimizes space to comfortably sit under mid-to-large cabinet framing while offering plenty of physical real estate for oversized support gear. Raw drain water entering the system drops straight into a specialized bubble-diffusing intake chamber driven by dual 1-inch bulkhead inputs. This compartment features a custom form-fitting acrylic cover plate that dampens crashing acoustic water noise, stops micro-bubbles from migrating into the display pump intake, and traps salt spray to protect under-cabinet electrical modules from salt creep. For mechanical filtration, the integrated dual 4-inch filter sock seats hold standard media socks for heavy debris capture. For those looking to ditch manual sock cleaning loops entirely, the structural layout is precision-machined to house a direct drop-in Klir Automatic 4-Inch Fleece Filter.
The center of the sump houses an exceptionally wide protein skimmer and media reactor bay governed by an adjustable weir overflow gate. By loosening the integrated nylon thumbscrews, you can shift the operational water column height from 5.1 up to 9 inches deep on the fly. This adjustable depth allows you to lock in the exact operational immersion height required by your skimmer's venturi throat, ensuring optimal foam generation without needing to purchase an awkward aftermarket riser shelf. Flanked by an isolated return pump compartment and an expansive built-in 4.7-gallon freshwater top-off reservoir, this robust workhorse serves as a sleek and functional foundation for high-end reef systems.
Key Features
Industrial Structural Assembly: Heavy cast acrylic sheets are welded together by hand with seamless solvent joints to avoid warping, structural bowing, or hairline leaks over time.
Dynamic Skimmer Calibration: Eliminates fixed-baffle restrictions by giving you immediate manual control over the skimmer compartment's working water level.
Expanded ATO Storage: Includes a dedicated 4.7-gallon reservoir with an evaporation lid to keep your automatic top-off supply clean and nearby.
Anti-Siphon Isolation: The return pump chamber sits safely partitioned away from shifting water levels, ensuring stable automated freshwater replenishment.
Polished Finishing Bevels: All exposed edges feature precision machined profiles to prevent finger pinches or wire abrasions during regular equipment scrub-downs.

- Carefully slide the empty OCTO OS-30A sump into your dry equipment cabinet, checking that you have clear overhead space to lift the skimmer cup and ATO lids.
- Align your main display tank's primary drain line pipes directly down into the dual 1-inch slip bulkhead unions located at the rear bubble diffuser compartment.
- Loosen the dual nylon thumbscrews on the adjustable baffle wall and set the sliding weir panel to match your protein skimmer's recommended depth setting.
- Position your chosen protein skimmer inside the main 14.6-inch chamber and place your return pump into the designated isolated return corner.
- Plumb your return pump up to your display return line, fill the sump with saltwater until it spills over the baffle, and plug in your circulation network.
- Fill the secondary isolated freshwater reservoir with pure RO/DI water, drop in your ATO pump line, and secure the matching acrylic dust lid.
Pro Tips:
- Set the Skimmer Gate First. Before plugging in your protein skimmer, look up its manufacturer-specified optimal running depth. Loosen the sump's weir thumbscrews and line up the top of the sliding gate with that exact height mark on a ruler before locking it back down. Setting this baffle height before you fire up your equipment prevents your skimmer from instantly overflowing or dry-stalling during its initial startup loop.
- Keep the Diffuser Lid on Tight. Make it a habit to leave the acrylic cover plate sitting flush over the rear drain compartment during normal operation. Rushing drain water crashing into a sump releases a continuous spray of microscopic saltwater droplets. If left uncovered, this spray escapes into your cabinet, creating heavy salt creep that can corrode metal hinges, coat wires, and ruin surrounding electrical gear.
- Transition to Automatic Mechanical Rollers. If you find yourself putting off cleaning or replacing your 4-inch filter socks every few days, consider upgrading the mechanical section with a Klir Di-4 Fleece Filter. The OS-30A was designed from the ground up to receive this specific drop-in roller unit. It fits directly into the factory sock opening and hooks up to a localized controller to automatically advance clean fleece whenever the water level rises, giving you true automated filtration.
