Reef Octopus VarioS 2 & RODC-2500 Replacement Intake Strainer (ROP-VAR2-STNR)
The Reef Octopus VarioS 2 & RODC-2500 Intake Strainer (SKU: ROP-VAR2-STNR) is an authentic factory-spec replacement protective screen distributed by CoralVue to preserve the operational safety and interior hardware integrity of your filtration loop. When running a controllable DC pump in a submersible configuration inside a sump or open filtration reservoir, its directional vacuum draw generates a continuous siphon pull. Without a dedicated structural barrier over the intake mouth, this localized suction stream can easily pull floating macroalgae, loose filter pad fibers, substrate pebbles, or wandering invertebrates directly into the spinning core of the motor block.
If a hard object like a small vermetid or turbo snail shell passes an open intake and strikes the internal impeller, it can instantly snap the specialized polished ceramic rotor shaft or lock the motor assembly under high resistance. While your smart pump controller features electronic auto-shutoff failsafes to detect sudden current surges, the physical impact alone can permanently gouge the internal housing walls or strip the magnetic block, resulting in a costly system failure. Installing this genuine OEM threaded basket over the intake nozzle creates a secure physical boundary ring. The optimized grid structure safely diffuses the vacuum velocity across a larger surface area, preventing structural flow restriction and cavitation while keeping your internal components perfectly insulated from damage.
Key Features
True Factory Sizing Tolerances: Molded with high-precision threads to drop cleanly onto the native suction tracks of the small-frame return pump housing.
Hydrodynamically Slotted Matrix: Built with a high-density grid pattern calculated to supply an un-constricted, high-volume fluid path that satisfies the pump's operational demands.
Reef-Safe Structural Material: Constructed from dense, chemical-inert plastics that will never pit, leach heavy plasticizers, or degrade under direct saltwater submersion.
Deep-Thread Structural Collar: Plastic threaded base ring provides excellent cross-thread resistance and stays firmly anchored under continuous pump currents.
Verified Hardware Compatibility
Reef Octopus Controllable DC Return Pumps: Sized explicitly as the native matching suction pre-filter for the VarioS-2 Controllable Return Pump and the legacy RODC-2500 Controllable Water Pump.
(Note: This strainer is engineered strictly for the small-frame return pump housing. Larger models, such as the VarioS 4, 6, 8, or 10 series, utilize wider suction metrics and require their respective model-specific replacement strainers).
What’s Included:
(1) Reef Octopus Replacement VarioS 2 / RODC-2500 Threaded Plastic Intake Strainer Basket
(Note: Union flanges, replacement plumbing adapters, silicone O-rings, and primary pump motor blocks are sold separately).
Technical Specs:
Official Manufacturing Title: Reef Octopus Intake Strainer for VarioS 2 / RODC-2500
SKU / Factory Part Identifier: ROP-VAR2-STNR
Connection Type Configuration: Small-Frame Female Threaded Base Collar
Material Composition: Saltwater-Safe High-Impact Injection-Molded Polymer
Primary Function: Impeller Protection, Micro-Fauna Safety Shield, & Suction Diffusion
- Power down your pump controller and disconnect the main AC/DC power transformer from the wall to halt all internal impeller rotation before handling the pump.
- If your pump is installed inside a crowded sump bay, clear away neighboring equipment to give your hands free access to the front volute cover.
- Unscrew the old, damaged, or algae-clogged strainer counter-clockwise off the front-facing suction nozzle of the pump housing.
- Wipe off the male threads of the pump volute cover with a soft cloth to clear away any trapped debris, slime, or gritty salt creep.
- Take your new ROP-VAR2-STNR replacement strainer, align it straight against the intake nozzle, and thread it clockwise by hand.
- Spin the strainer down firmly until the shoulder collar sits flush against the volute face. Do not overtighten, submerge the pump, and restore power.
Pro Tips:
- Only Use This Screen in Submerged (Wet) Applications. This plastic intake strainer is strictly intended for open submersible installations where the pump sits directly underwater inside your filtration sump. If you are plumbing your pump inline as a dry, external return unit outside of your glass sump, you must remove this strainer entirely and replace it with a hard-piped metric PVC union connection to prevent massive external flooding.
- Clean the Strainer Grid Monthly to Stop Cavitation. Because this screen sits right at the primary suction point of your motor block, it will naturally act as a magnet for floating organic debris, loose macroalgae strands (like Chaetomorpha), and soft bacterial films. If you allow these materials to build up and coat the grid slots for months, the restricted water path will force the pump to starve for water. This restriction triggers localized cavitation, loud rattling noises, and unsafe heat buildup inside the ceramic bearing bay. Brush the screen clean during your monthly sump maintenance.
- Always Hand-Tighten Only — Avoid Metal Pliers. When screwing your replacement strainer onto the premium front volute cover of the pump, never use channel locks, vice-grips, or metal wrenches to crank it down tight. The strainer base is made of molded polymer plastic; using heavy mechanical tools will easily split the threaded collar ring or cross-thread the fine plastic channels on your pump volute face. Gentle fingertip pressure is all that is required to seat this safety screen securely.
