Sinking 2mm Pellet Specifically Formulated for Discus Fish
The Dymax Discus Gold Pellets is a 2mm sinking pellet built specifically for Discus fish, the most nutritionally demanding species in the freshwater hobby. No other food in the Dymax range names Discus as the primary target species. At 45% protein and 7% fat — the highest fat content of any Dymax freshwater pellet — the formula reflects the energy requirements of discus, which operate at higher temperatures (82 to 86°F) than most tropical freshwater fish and metabolize food accordingly.
The sinking pellet format is a deliberate design choice for the discus keeper's context. Discus are mid-water fish that hold position in the water column and feed without swimming to the surface. A floating pellet creates surface competition that discus, particularly shy or recently introduced fish, often lose to faster community tank mates. A sinking 2mm pellet delivered into the mid-column reaches discus at their natural feeding level. Krill paste and krill meal provide the palatability that makes the pellet appealing to discus, which can be resistant to prepared food when conditioned on live or frozen prey. Dymax notes the formula is compatible with live food — it is designed to work alongside beef heart, bloodworm, or frozen brine shrimp rather than to replace them entirely.
Key Features:
- 2mm sinking pellet specifically formulated for Discus fish
- 45% protein and 7% fat — highest fat content of any Dymax freshwater pellet, supporting discus energy needs at high operating temperatures
- Krill paste and krill meal provide high palatability for discus that resist prepared food
- Cassava starch contributes to controlled pellet density during the sink for mid-column delivery
- Astaxanthin and spirulina for natural all-round color enhancement
- Prebiotic bacteria (Bacillus Subtilis) and β-Glucan support immune function and digestive efficiency
- Garlic extract for feeding stimulation in recently imported or selective discus
- Compatible with live food — designed to work alongside beef heart, bloodworm, and frozen feeds
- Safe to use with other freshwater fish including guppies, mollies, and angelfish in a community discus setup
Ideal For:
- Discus keepers running a single-species discus setup of 40 to 75 gallons who want to trial the Discus Gold formula alongside or as a supplement to an existing live or frozen food program
- First-time discus keepers establishing a discus community tank who want a species-appropriate prepared pellet as the foundation of the feeding program
- Pet stores stocking the entry size of Discus Gold to give discus hobbyist shoppers a lower-commitment introduction to the formula
Pro Tips:
- Discus are slow, deliberate feeders — give them 10 to 15 minutes. Unlike cichlids or community fish that rush food, discus pick at pellets methodically. Resist removing uneaten pellets after two minutes; most discus will still be feeding. Ten to fifteen minutes is a more appropriate window before removal.
- Feed at the same time each day in a quiet tank. Discus are sensitive to sudden movement and sound. Consistent feeding times in a stable environment produce better feeding responses than irregular sessions with tank disturbance. Dim room lighting during feeding helps in tanks near foot traffic.
- Introduce Discus Gold alongside a familiar food first. Discus conditioned on live beef heart or frozen bloodworm can take one to three weeks to accept a prepared pellet. Offering Discus Gold at the start of each feeding session before introducing frozen food — and gradually reducing the frozen portion — is more effective than a direct switch.

Technical Analysis:
While most of our equipment carries a one-year manufacturer's warranty, consumable products like fish and coral foods are not covered under traditional warranty terms due to their perishable nature and varied storage conditions. However, we fully stand behind the quality of every product we sell. If you experience any issues with your food purchase shortly after receiving it, such as concerns about freshness, packaging integrity, or product quality, please contact us at [email protected]. We're committed to making it right and will work with you to resolve any problems quickly and fairly.
Instructions:
- Feed two to three times daily in small amounts.
- Drop the 2mm pellets into the tank near where the discus are holding position. The pellets sink slowly to the mid-column and continue descending if uneaten.
- Allow discus 10 to 15 minutes to feed before removing any uneaten pellets.
- For fish being introduced to Discus Gold for the first time, offer at the start of the feeding session before any live or frozen food. Reduce live/frozen portions gradually over two to four weeks as pellet acceptance increases.
- Store tightly sealed in a cool, dry location between feedings.
Note: This product is designed to complement live and frozen food programs rather than to fully replace them. Optimal discus nutrition typically involves rotation between prepared, frozen, and, in some cases, live food sources.
