Globally trusted for premium protein skimmers and pumps, engineered in-house for unmatched reef filtration performance.

Reef Octopus MF1000 Advanced Media Reactor

The Reef Octopus MF1000 Advanced Media Reactor is a versatile and efficient solution for maintaining superior water quality in marine and freshwater aquaria. Engineered for in-sump use, this reactor features an optimized up-flow design that forces water through the entire media bed, eliminating "dead spots" and ensuring that every grain of media is utilized for maximum chemical filtration. Whether you are running Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) for phosphate control or Activated Carbon for water clarity, the MF1000 provides the consistent environment required for peak performance.

As a standalone reaction chamber, the MF1000 does not include a pump, giving you the flexibility to select a feed source—such as a dedicated pump or a manifold line—that best fits your system's flow requirements. Its 1.5-liter capacity makes it a robust choice for systems up to 250 gallons, allowing for significant chemical filtration volume without a bulky footprint. The precision-engineered sieve plates and secure lid assembly keep your media safely contained, protecting your return pumps and ensuring a clean filtration environment.

    Key Features

    • Optimized Up-Flow Design: Ensures water passes evenly through the media to maximize contact time and efficiency.
    • Standalone Versatility: Pump not included, allowing for customized flow rates via a dedicated pump or manifold.
    • High Media Capacity: Holds up to 1.5 liters of chemical media for comprehensive nutrient management in large systems.
    • Durable Construction: Crafted from hand-polished, high-quality acrylic for maximum clarity and structural integrity.
    • Small In-Sump Footprint: Compact base design allows for easy integration into standard aquarium sumps.
    • Easy Maintenance: Features a secure, removable top lid for fast media changes and cleaning.

    Ideal For

    • Mixed reef and fish-only systems up to 250 gallons requiring consistent chemical filtration.
    • Hobbyists using Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO) to combat rising phosphate levels.
    • Aquarists utilize activated carbon to remove yellowing pigments and chemical toxins.
    • Systems where space is limited but high-capacity chemical filtration is still required.
    • Advanced reefers who prefer to tune media tumble rates using a controllable external pump.

    1. Unpack the MF1000 and ensure the internal plumbing is correctly aligned.
    2. Add your desired chemical media (Carbon or GFO) to the reaction chamber.
    3. Ensure the O-ring is seated properly and tighten the top lid securely.
    4. Connect an external feed pump or manifold line (sold separately) to the reactor inlet.
    5. Slowly turn on the water flow and verify it is evenly distributed through the media.
    6. Adjust flow until the surface of the GFO is gently "simmering"; for Carbon, ensure the media is stationary or only slightly moving.
    Pro Tip

Use a ball valve on your feed line to prevent "media grinding." Because the MF1000 doesn't include a pump, adding a valve allows you to precisely control the flow. Carbon should not tumble aggressively as it will break down into fine dust that can irritate corals.

Rinse your media through the reactor before placing it in the sump. To avoid pushing dust into your tank, run a few gallons of water through the reactor into a bucket until the output runs clear before final installation.

Sandwich lighter media between filter pads. If you are using very fine resins or a mix of media, placing a thin layer of coarse foam or filter floss between the sieve plates will keep everything contained and prevent clogging.
