50mm Metric Check Valve
SKU: PVC-CHKVLV-50
- Backflow Protection: Instantly stops water from siphoning back into the sump during power outages or pump failures.
- Commercial Capacity: Sized specifically for 50mm metric PVC pipe (approx. 2" OD), the standard for large-scale Reef Octopus filtration.
- High-Efficiency Flow: Optimized internal bore minimizes "head loss," allowing high-performance pumps to maintain maximum output.
- Saltwater Tough: Built from industrial-grade grey UPVC with professional seals, 100% safe for marine reef environments.
- Fail-Safe Sealing: Features a precision-weighted or spring-assisted internal mechanism for a reliable seal at various pressure levels.
- Ideal For: 50mm return manifolds; large display drain protection; high-volume commercial filtration.
Reef Octopus
Globally trusted for premium protein skimmers and pumps, engineered in-house for unmatched reef filtration performance.
50mm Metric Check Valve
The 50mm Metric Check Valve (Non-Return Valve) is a robust safety component engineered for high-volume water management in professional aquarium and commercial aquaculture systems. Precision-sized for 50mm Metric PVC pipe, this valve is the primary choice for the return plumbing of large-scale Reef Octopus commercial protein skimmers and heavy-duty European life support systems.
In large systems, the volume of water held in the return plumbing can be substantial. In the event of a power outage, the 50mm check valve prevents this water from crashing back into the sump, protecting against overflows and potential flood damage. By keeping the plumbing lines primed, it also ensures a quiet and immediate restart of filtration once power is restored. Crafted from industrial-grade grey UPVC, it offers a level of durability and professional aesthetic far superior to standard residential white PVC.
Key Features
True Metric Calibration: Fits 50mm OD metric pipe—essential for maintaining factory Reef Octopus and commercial-grade gear.
Industrial Strength: Rated for pressures up to 16 bar (232 psi), making it suitable for the most powerful commercial return pumps.
Low Resistance: Engineered to open with minimal pressure, ensuring your energy costs stay low and your flow rates stay high.
Chemical Resistance: 100% saltwater safe and will not leach harmful chemicals or corrode in harsh marine conditions.
Deep Socket Slip Connection: Provides a massive surface area for a secure, permanent solvent weld.
Ideal For
Large Return Manifolds: The primary safety device for aquariums 300 gallons and larger.
Commercial Filtration Racks: Protecting independent pumps from back-pressure in shared manifold systems.
Public Aquarium Exhibits: Heavy-duty plumbing for large-scale display tanks.

Material: Industrial Grade Grey UPVC
Max Pressure: 16 bar / 232 psi
Operating Temp: 0°C – 60°C (32°F – 140°F)
Compatibility: 50mm Metric Pipe ONLY
- Locate the flow direction arrow on the valve body; it must point toward the aquarium or intended flow direction.
- Cut the 50mm metric pipe square and use a deburring tool to smooth the edges to protect internal gaskets.
- Perform a dry-fit to ensure the valve is accessible for periodic maintenance and cleaning.
- Apply PVC primer and solvent cement to both the pipe end and the internal valve socket.
- Insert the pipe into the socket with a slight twist and hold for 30–45 seconds.
- For maximum reliability, install the valve in a vertical position (upward flow) so gravity assists the internal seal.
- Metric vs. Standard 2-Inch. A 50mm metric valve will not fit standard 1.5" or 2" USA Schedule 40/80 pipe. 50mm is approximately 1.97 inches, whereas US 2" pipe has a 2.375-inch OD. Always measure your existing pipe with a caliper to confirm you are using metric components.
- Maintenance Schedule. In a marine environment, check valves can accumulate calcium carbonate or small organisms (like tube worms or snails). We recommend inspecting and cleaning the internal mechanism every 6–12 months to ensure it can achieve a watertight seal in an emergency.
- Industrial Aesthetics. Use clear PVC primer instead of purple to maintain the professional, factory look of the grey UPVC. This matches the aesthetic of Reef Octopus equipment for a high-end, clean installation.
