CoralVue 28ppt Low-Range Salinity Calibration Fluid

Maintaining exact water chemistry is critical for the survival of marine organisms, and the CoralVue 28ppt Salinity Calibration Fluid (SKU: CV-SCS28) provides the laboratory-grade precision required to keep your testing equipment calibrated. While standard coral reef aquariums are kept at 35ppt (1.026 Specific Gravity), quarantine systems and hospital tanks are frequently maintained at a much lower salinity level. Known as hyposalinity therapy, keeping water at or near 28ppt is a highly effective, medication-free method to alleviate osmotic stress on recovering fish and suppress hazardous external parasites.

Because testing instruments like optical refractometers and digital conductivity probes can drift over time due to temperature changes and residual salt build-up, regular calibration is essential. This 250mL bottle of 28ppt fluid is formulated as a pure sodium chloride solution that exactly mimics the refractive index and electrical conductivity of 28ppt seawater. By calibrating your testing gear to this lower range standard, you ensure that diagnostic readings on your quarantine and therapeutic systems are accurate, eliminating the guesswork that can lead to salinity shock.

Why Choose a 28ppt Calibration Standard?

When measuring water that is far from your calibration point, testing instruments can exhibit "scale slope error"—meaning a probe calibrated at 35ppt may read slightly inaccurately when dipping down to therapeutic levels. Using CV-SCS28 allows you to calibrate your device closer to your target operating range, yielding highly precise and reliable data when managing specialized environments.

Note: This retail SKU contains (1) 250mL bottle of CoralVue 28ppt Salinity Calibration Fluid. Testing instruments, refractometers, and storage pipettes are sold separately.

For Optical Refractometers:

  1. Ensure your refractometer prism and plastic cover plate are completely clean and dry using a soft microfiber cloth.

  2. Shake the CoralVue CV-SCS28 bottle gently to ensure a homogeneous solution.

  3. Apply 2 to 3 drops of the 28ppt fluid directly onto the glass prism face.

  4. Close the plastic cover plate so the fluid spreads evenly across the prism without leaving air bubbles or dry spots.

  5. Allow the fluid to sit on the prism for 30 seconds so the temperature of the fluid adapts to the temperature of the refractometer (ATC adjustment).

  6. Look through the eyepiece and adjust the calibration screw until the boundary line rests exactly on the 28ppt (or 1.021 S.G.) mark on the scale.

  7. Wipe the prism clean with a damp cloth, dry it thoroughly, and store.

For Digital Probes and Salinity Monitors:

  1. Rinse your salinity probe tip with RO/DI water and blot it dry.

  2. Pour a small amount of CV-SCS28 calibration fluid into a clean diagnostic cup. Never dip your probe directly into the master bottle to prevent contamination.

  3. Submerge the probe tip fully into the fluid sample and swirl gently to dislodge any air bubbles trapped on the sensor electrodes.

  4. Allow the reading to stabilize for 1 to 2 minutes so the probe`s built-in temperature sensor matches the fluid temperature.

  5. Access your monitor or controller`s calibration menu and select the calibration option, setting the target value to 28ppt (refer to your specific device manual).

  6. Discard the used sample fluid; do not pour used fluid back into the master bottle.

Pro Tips:

  • Never Squeeze Used Fluid Back Into the Master Bottle.
CRITICAL CALIBRATION ACCURACY WARNING: Even a single drop of aquarium water or dust on your testing equipment can alter the salinity of the fluid inside the bottle. Always pour out a tiny sample into a secondary cup for testing, and discard it when finished. This ensures the master bottle remains pure and accurate down to the very last drop.
  • Store Fluid at Room Temperature with the Cap Sealed Tight. Evaporation is the primary enemy of calibration solutions. If the cap is left loose, water will slowly escape from the bottle, increasing the salt concentration and throwing off your future calibrations. Keep the flip-cap tightly clicked shut and store the bottle in a cool, dark cabinet away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Calibrate Your Equipment Regularly. For quarantine systems where keeping an exact salinity is a matter of life or death for fragile fish undergoing hyposalinity treatment, calibrate your refractometer or digital probe at least once a week. Drift can happen unexpectedly due to physical bumps or temperature changes in your workspace.
