Hang-on-back (HOB) protein skimmers mount directly to the rim of an aquarium, meaning any equipment noise operates right in your living space rather than being muffled inside an enclosed sump cabinet. During normal operation, the K3-150HOB skimmer’s controllable DCAIR pump pulls high volumes of atmospheric air through a venturi nozzle to generate dense microbubbles for organic waste removal. Drawing this volume of air at high velocity produces a continuous, harsh suction hiss and bubbling vibration. The IP-K3150-SIL air silencer incorporates internal baffle chambers that dissipate sound waves and laminarize airflow before it reaches the venturi intake. Installation & Maintenance Guidelines:
Turn off or pause the IceCap DCAIR pump via the controller feed mode.
Carefully pull the flexible silicone airline tubing off the barbs of the old air silencer.
Unclip or slide the old silencer unit out from its body mounting bracket on the K3-150HOB frame.
Mount the new IP-K3150-SIL air silencer onto the designated body bracket or rim slot.
Inspect your silicone air tubing for salt crust, pinholes, or hardening; trim or replace if necessary.
Push the airline tubing securely onto the lower barb of the new air silencer until firmly seated against the base.
Restore pump power on the controller and verify quiet, steady air suction without restriction.
Pro Tips:
- Rinse in Warm RO/DI Water Monthly. Because hang-on-back skimmers operate in open air, dust and dried salt spray naturally accumulate inside the silencer chamber. Dissolve salt deposits and clear dust buildup by flushing the silencer under warm freshwater or RO/DI water during monthly cup cleanings. Ensure the unit is completely drained and dry before reconnecting to prevent water droplets from being drawn into the venturi.
- Keep Airline Tubing Free of Kinks and Sagging Loops. When routing flexible airline tubing between the IP-K3150-SIL and the venturi pump inlet, keep the hose as straight and direct as possible. Long sagging loops allow airborne humidity to condense into liquid droplets inside the hose, creating erratic bubbling, surging water levels, and cyclical gurgling sounds.
