  • The Reef Octopus NS80 is a nano hang-on-back protein skimmer rated for aquariums up to 25 gallons.
  • It is designed for nano reef tanks, small all-in-one aquariums, overflow chambers, and small wet/dry sumps where a full-size skimmer won't fit.
  • It runs on the included OTP-200S pinwheel pump and produces 200 LPH (52.8 GPH) of water flow through the skimmer body.
  • The positionable mounting bracket, bubble diffuser, and easy-remove collection cup bring standard skimmer features down to a 4" x 2.4" footprint.

Nano Protein Skimmer for Small Reef and Saltwater Aquariums

The Reef Octopus NS80 Nano Skimmer is a hang-on-back protein skimmer built specifically for systems up to 25 gallons where size is the primary constraint. It mounts via a positionable bracket directly in the tank, on an overflow chamber wall, or in a small sump, and draws power from the included OTP-200S pinwheel pump rated at 5 watts. At 4" x 2.4" and just 11" tall with a 2" body diameter, it fits in tight spaces that rule out any larger skimmer.

Despite its size, the NS80 carries over several features from Reef Octopus's larger Classic series skimmers: a bubble diffuser to break up microbubbles before they exit the body, an adjustable raiser pipe to control the internal water level inside the skimmer, and a removable collection cup that comes off cleanly for emptying and cleaning. The wet-type skimmer design means it operates with water inside the pump housing, which is appropriate and expected for a skimmer of this class and size.

Filtration Handling Guide
  • 25 gallons — Light filtration demand
  • 15 gallons — Medium filtration demand
  • 10 gallons — Heavy filtration demand

Key Features:

  • The OTP-200S pinwheel pump runs at just 5 watts and is sized specifically for the NS80's narrow body diameter.
  • The adjustable raiser pipe lets you dial in the internal water level inside the skimmer body, controlling foam height and collection rate.
  • A bubble diffuser reduces microbubble output from the skimmer body into the tank or sump.
  • The positionable mounting bracket lets you adjust the angle and height of the skimmer to fit different tank wall thicknesses and water depths.
  • The easy-remove collection cup lifts off for quick emptying and cleaning without tools.
  • Wet-type pump design suitable for nano-scale installations.
  • Compact 4" x 2.4" footprint with 2" body diameter fits nano overflows, small sumps, and AIO back chambers.

Ideal For:

  • Nano reef and saltwater tanks from 10 to 25 gallons running light to medium bioloads.
  • All-in-one aquariums with small rear filter chambers where only a compact in-sump skimmer will fit.
  • Small wet/dry sumps or overflow chambers where a hang-on-back skimmer body needs to drop into a narrow space.
  • Hobbyists setting up their first reef tank who want a complete, ready-to-run skimmer at a low entry price point.

Pro Tips:

  • Give the NS80 two to four weeks to break in before adjusting. New protein skimmers often over-skim or produce wet, watery skimmate for the first week or two as the pump and body surfaces condition. Resist the urge to tweak the raiser pipe constantly during break-in. Set it to mid-range and let it stabilize.
  • Use the raiser pipe to tune foam, not flow. The raiser pipe adjusts the water level inside the skimmer body. Raising it produces drier, darker skimmate; lowering it produces wetter, lighter skimmate. On a lightly stocked nano tank, wetter skimmate is often normal — the organic load is simply lower.
  • Keep the collection cup neck clean weekly. On a nano skimmer, a thin film of dried skimmate on the neck can restrict foam from cresting into the cup and make it look like the skimmer isn't working. A quick wipe with a damp cloth each week keeps performance consistent.

Instructions:

  1. Attach the mounting bracket to the NS80 skimmer body and position it on the wall of your tank, overflow chamber, or sump. Adjust the bracket angle so the skimmer body sits level and fully submerged to the correct water line.
  2. Connect the OTP-200S pump to the skimmer body inlet.
  3. Submerge the pump and skimmer body. The water surface inside the skimmer body should reach approximately the midpoint of the body when the pump is running.
  4. Power on the pump. You will see bubbles begin rising through the body immediately.
  5. Set the raiser pipe to the mid-height position as a starting point. This controls the internal water level and foam height.
  6. Allow the skimmer two to four weeks to break in. During this period, output may be wet and light in color — this is normal.
  7. Once broken in, fine-tune the raiser pipe: raise it slightly for drier, darker skimmate; lower it for wetter, lighter output.
  8. Clean the collection cup neck weekly and empty the cup as needed.
