Octo 40mm Skimmer Output Vent
SKU: ROP-40VENT
Siphon-Breaking Design: Open-atmosphere vertical standpipe prevents airlocks and breaks siphons to stabilize the skimmer's internal water level.
Whisper-Quiet Operation: Eliminates splashing and aggressive gurgling noises at the skimmer's drainage point into the sump.
Tee-Fitting Architecture: Connects directly to any 40mm metric skimmer discharge gate valve, routing water downwards while venting air upwards.
100% Reef-Safe Materials: Constructed from high-density, aquarium-grade uPVC completely free of toxic plasticizers and metals.
Easy Modular Slip Fit: Assembles without glue or solvent welding, allowing quick breakdown for simple cleaning of organic build-up.

Reef Octopus 40mm Skimmer Output Vent (SKU: ROP-40VENT)
Unstable water levels and noisy discharge drains are two of the most common issues faced when dialing in high-performance protein skimmers. The Reef Octopus 40mm Skimmer Output Vent (SKU: ROP-40VENT) is a specialized plumbing accessory engineered to solve both problems at once. When water exits a skimmer through a traditional pipe into the sump, it can easily trap air pockets or create a fluctuating mini-siphon. This dynamic back-pressure pushes water backward, causing the skimmer's internal bubble column to rise and fall erratically—frequently resulting in premature collection cup overflows ("foaming over").
The ROP-40VENT acts as an open-atmosphere siphon break. It installs directly onto the discharge side of any 40mm metric skimmer gate valve or wedge pipe. The design utilizes a vertical tee assembly: the bottom exit directs water down toward the sump surface via a diagonal splash-reducing cut, while the top of the tee hosts an elongated vertical standpipe capped with a vented cover. This allows trapped air to vent freely into the atmosphere while water falls smoothly into the sump, ensuring the skimmer's internal body pressure remains completely stable.
Stable Performance, Silent Sump
By separating air and water at the exit point, the ROP-40VENT silences obnoxious splashing and sucking sounds. Because the assembly is held together by precision friction-fit slip joints, it requires zero PVC glue to install. This modular design makes it incredibly easy to pull apart and rinse out when calcium, salt creep, or organic mulm accumulates inside the pipe over time.

Primary Compatibility: Reef Octopus and Regal skimmers utilizing 40mm (approx 1-1/4" equivalent) gate valves
Assembly and Installation:
Locate the 40mm discharge pipe exiting your Reef Octopus skimmer's gate valve.
Push the short 40mm metric connector pipe sleeve directly into the discharge of your skimmer's gate valve.
Slide the horizontal branch of the junction tee onto the connector sleeve. Ensure the tee is oriented vertically (one open port pointing straight up, one pointing straight down).
Slide the vertical vented standpipe into the top port of the junction tee.
Insert the diagonal-cut discharge spout into the bottom port of the junction tee. Rotate the spout so the angled opening faces away from any nearby sump walls to minimize splash feedback.
Position the bottom of the spout so it sits roughly 1/2 inch below the operating water level of your sump. This creates a completely silent underwater exit while the open standpipe above prevents siphoning.
Do not glue any of these joints. The friction fit is watertight and allows for easy cleaning.
Pro Tips:
- Never Glue the Connections on the Vent Assembly.
CRITICAL SKIMMER MAINTENANCE WARNING: Do not use PVC primer or solvent cement on any part of the ROP-40VENT. Protein skimmer discharge lines carry concentrated organic waste and calcium-rich water, which will form a hard crust inside the pipe over time. Leaving the joints as a friction fit allows you to completely disassemble the vent assembly for a quick vinegar soak every few months.
- Perfect Your Discharge Depth. For optimal silencing, adjust the depth of the diagonal discharge spout so it is submerged approximately 1/2" to 1" below the surface of your sump water. If submerged too deeply, it can recreate back-pressure inside the skimmer. If left suspended entirely above the water, it will create a trickling waterfall sound.
- Keep the Vented Cap Clean. The small air vents in the top cap of the vertical standpipe must remain clear. If salt creep or dust clogs these top vents, air will get trapped inside the standpipe, turning the assembly back into a pressurized closed loop and defeating the siphon break. Quickly wipe the cap clean during your weekly skimmer cup maintenance.
