  • Available Through Authorized Retailer
  • Fused Ceramic Sphere Matrix: Formed from an incredibly dense, porous network of tiny ceramic beads, creating thousands of micro-tunnels for massive bacterial colonization.

  • Exceptional Surface-to-Volume Ratio: A single large 8-inch brick supplies enough high-density biological filtration capacity to support setups up to 750 gallons.

  • Completely Neutral pH Stability: Formulated from fully cured, inert ceramic materials that maintain a completely safe, neutral pH range (7.0–7.5) without altering water chemistry.

  • Universal Placement Adaptability: The space-saving rectangular brick form factor allows it to be neatly stacked or placed in large sumps, commercial filtration systems, trickle setups, or pond basins.

  • Protects Against Biological Crashes: Deep micro-cavities shield the internal bacterial colonies from dying off entirely during harsh filter wipe-downs or equipment maintenance.

  • Optimized for Liquid Pre-Seeding: High-wicking porous structure instantly draws in concentrated starter strains during pre-submersion preparation to jumpstart newly cycling tanks.

IceCap 8" Bio-Plate Biological Filter Media (IC-BIOPLT8)

The IceCap 8-Inch Bio-Plate Biological Filter Media (SKU: IC-BIOPLT8) is an authentic, premium-tier bacterial colonization substrate distributed by CoralVue to establish an unshakeable biological foundation in massive freshwater, high-load marine reef, and outdoor pond environments. In closed aquatic systems, managing the nitrogen cycle is paramount to livestock survival. Fish respiration, organic detritus, and lingering uneaten food continuously decay into highly toxic ammonia and nitrites. Traditional plastic bio-balls or smooth ceramic rings provide limited surface areas, often clogging quickly and failing to support the massive populations of Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter bacteria required for efficient nutrient cycling. The IC-BIOPLT8 resolves this structural bottleneck by providing an extraordinarily vast, deeply porous internal labyrinth within a massive, brick-shaped profile.

Rather than relying on basic molded clay or extruded stone, IceCap utilizes an advanced manufacturing matrix that clusters thousands of microscopic ceramic spheres together into a durable 8 x 4 x 1.5-inch block form. This open-cell architecture ensures that water passes entirely through the brick rather than flowing solely over the outer skin, eliminating stagnant dead zones and multiplying the active surface area exponentially. Because it packs the filtering power of thousands of standard bio-balls into a neat, stackable layout, it easily slides into high-flow equipment spaces like under-cabinet sumps, media boxes, large canister filter baskets, or wet/dry trickle towers. Chemically inert and highly durable, it provides a stable biological filter that safely processes waste without leaching altering silicates, shifting critical KH values, or degrading under continuous water flow.

Key Features

  • Mitigates New Tank Syndrome: Acts as an immense biological safety net during the first few weeks of a new aquarium setup while your biological nitrifying bacterial colonies are establishing.

  • Eliminates Nitrate Trapping: Exceptional through-flow geometry allows physical waste to drift past the plate rather than packing tightly inside, preventing hidden detritus traps.

  • Zero Chemical Leaching: Fully inert material construction guarantees that it will not bleed compounds back into your water column, ensuring complete safety for delicate corals and invertebrates.

  • (Note: This biological media item includes one standalone 8in Bio-Plate block. Mechanical pre-filtration padding and biological booster cultures are sold separately).

  1. Unbox your IceCap Bio-Plate and handle it gently by the edges to prevent minor crumbling of the ultra-porous surface beads during preparation.
  2. Thoroughly rinse the block under a low-pressure freshwater tap or inside a bucket of clean reverse osmosis (RO) or aquarium water to clear out any dust generated during shipping transit. Do not use soap or chemical detergents.
  3. For accelerated biological cycling, place the rinsed brick inside a clean container and pour in your preferred bacterial starter culture (such as Fauna Marin Bacto Blend), letting it soak overnight to fully absorb the bacteria.
  4. Position the Bio-Plate directly into your filtration stream. Ideal zones include aquarium sumps, media filters, canister baskets, trickle towers, or right beneath your mechanical filter sock holders.
  5. If using multiple units to support massive biological loads, plates can be neatly stacked on top of one another or aligned vertically like books on a shelf to match your available space.
  6. Clean and maintain the bio-filtration array every 12 months by pulling the block out and gently rinsing it inside a bucket filled with salvaged tank water to dislodge light surface mulm.

Pro Tips:

  • Never Clean or Replace Your Entire Bio-Media Bed All at Once. Your biological media houses the primary life-support colonies of your aquarium. If you scrub the block aggressively under hot chlorinated tap water, or replace your entire bio-media footprint at the same time, you will instantly sanitize and wipe out your beneficial nitrifying bacterial populations. This can trigger a catastrophic biological collapse known as "New Tank Syndrome," causing lethal ammonia spikes. Always rinse the media gently using drained tank water during a routine water change, and stagger replacements over separate months if utilizing multiple blocks.
  • Always Route Your Water Through a Mechanical Filter Pad Before It Hits the Bio-Plate. To keep your Bio-Plate performing at peak biological efficiency for years, ensure it is positioned after your mechanical pre-filters (such as filter socks, roller mats, or coarse foam sponges). If raw, unfiltered aquarium water dumps directly onto the ceramic brick, free-floating fish feces, uneaten food, and heavy plant detritus will quickly coat the porous exterior surface. This physically seals off the micro-tunnels, starving the underlying bacterial colonies of vital oxygen and dissolved nutrients.
  • Lightly Brush Surface Debris Off with a Soft Toothbrush Once a Year. Over months of continuous operation, a thin layer of natural bacterial biofilm and micro-detritus will form over the outer face of the plate. While some biofilm is necessary, a heavy accumulation can slow down water penetration into the core. During your annual maintenance, lift the block out and submerge it in a bucket of salvaged tank water. Use a very soft-bristled toothbrush to gently brush away surface sludge. This easily clears the micro-tunnels without shedding the deeply embedded internal bacterial colony.
