Reef Octopus Octo BioSphere Premium Bio-Pellets

Reef Octopus BioSphere Bio-Pellets offer a high-efficiency solution for maintaining ultra-low nutrient levels in saltwater reef aquariums. These pellets are composed of 100% pure biodegradable polymers that serve as a solid carbon source for beneficial bacteria. By providing a controlled environment within a fluidizing reactor, BioSphere pellets promote the colonization of bacteria that naturally consume nitrates and phosphates from the water column.

As the bacteria grow on the surface of the BioSphere Bio-Pellets, they "encapsulate" these excess nutrients. The constant tumbling action within a reactor, such as the Reef Octopus BioChurn series, gently rubs off the excess bacterial film. This bacterial biomass is then removed by a protein skimmer or consumed by filter-feeding organisms like corals and clams, effectively exporting the nutrients out of the closed system. This biological process mimics the natural filtration found on wild reefs, providing a stable and safe method for nutrient management.

    Key Features

    • Pure Carbon Source: Made from 100% biodegradable polymers with no fillers or impurities.
    • Nutrient Export: Stimulates the growth of bacteria that utilize nitrate and phosphate as energy.
    • Safe for Inhabitants: Promotes a natural biological process that is safe for sensitive corals and fish.
    • Self-Regulating: Bacteria only consume the media as needed based on the available nutrient levels in the tank.
    • High Surface Area: Pellet shape is optimized for maximum bacterial colonization and fluidization.

    Ideal For

    • Low Nutrient Systems (ULNS): Hobbyists striving for the precise water chemistry required for SPS corals.
    • BioChurn Reactors: Perfectly sized for fluidization in Reef Octopus BioChurn and other recirculating reactors.
    • Heavily Stocked Tanks: Aquariums with large fish populations where high nitrate levels are a constant challenge.
    • Natural Filtration Enthusiasts: Those looking to replace chemical resins or liquid dosing with a biological alternative.

Available in 500ml and 1000ml bags as well as 1/2 and 1 gallon bulk containers!

    What's Included:
    • BioSphere Bio-Pellets: 1000ml

    Specifications:
    • Material: 100% Pure Biodegradable Polymer
    • Application: Nitrate and Phosphate reduction
    • Recommended Dosage: 50–100ml of media per 25 gallons of system water
    • Manufacturer: Reef Octopus

    1. Rinse the pellets briefly with RO/DI water to remove any dust from shipping.
    2. Place the BioSphere pellets into a dedicated biopellet reactor.
    3. We recommend starting with 25% of the total suggested dose and increasing the amount over 4–6 weeks.
    4. Adjust the reactor flow so the pellets are in a gentle, constant tumble; avoiding "dead zones" where pellets can clump.
    5. Position the reactor's output near the intake of a protein skimmer to ensure the bacterial biomass is exported immediately.
    6. Top off the reactor with fresh pellets every 6–12 months as they are slowly consumed.

    Pro Tips:
Start slow to avoid bacterial blooms.
Adding a full dose of pellets to a high-nutrient system can cause a rapid bacterial explosion, which may deplete oxygen levels. Start with a small amount and wait 2 weeks before adding more to let your tank adjust.

Direct output to your skimmer. For maximum efficiency, the water leaving your pellet reactor should go directly into your skimmer's intake. This ensures that the bacteria—and the nitrates/phosphates they’ve consumed—are removed from the system before they can break back down.

Patience is key. It can take 3–6 weeks for the pellets to "seed" with enough bacteria to show a measurable drop in nitrates. Do not increase the dosage or flow during this initial break-in period.
