IceCap Small Black Drawstring Media Bag
The IceCap Small Black Drawstring Media Bag (SKU: IC-DMB-1521) is an authentic, high-utility filtration containment pouch distributed by CoralVue to provide a flexible solution for handling bulk loose media in smaller applications. Many chemical resins—like granular activated carbon (GAC), granular ferric oxide (GFO), or specialized copper removers—are sold in bulk jars without individual application bags. Tossing loose chemical granules directly into an open nanofiltration chamber or media cup will lead to media washing straight into return pump impellers, which scores ceramic shafts, breaks delicate needles, and clouds your display tank with black dust. The IC-DMB-1521 solves this by providing a reliable, heavy-duty containment boundary that locks down your chemical or biological media while keeping your water path fully open.
Measuring a compact 6 by 8.5 inches, this small-format bag offers the ideal structural volume required to hold targeted portions of biological media, bulk carbon charges, or large-capacity ion exchange resins without wasting precious space. While traditional media pouches rely on white fabrics that quickly stain a muddy yellow-brown or utilize metal zipper tabs that rapidly corrode and seize when exposed to high-salinity reef systems, IceCap utilizes a stealth-black premium nylon weave. Sealed tightly by pulling a heavy-duty cord drawstring closed, the bag completely removes any metallic dependency from your water loop. Pliable and tough, it can be tucked flat inside small external canister filter trays, laid down inside automated media cups, or placed across high-flow overflow channels for optimal contact time.
Key Features:
- Prevents Channeled Water Bypass: The tailored 6x8.5-inch surface area allows media to be spread thin and flat across your filtration chamber, forcing water to flow uniformly through the bed rather than cutting around a dense clump.
Resists Organic Staining: Deep black fiber construction hides unsightly organic brown mold and yellowing compounds, keeping your filtration setup looking clean.
Easy Media Replacement: When chemical media becomes exhausted, simply slide the tension lock open, shake the spent granules into the trash, rinse the bag under a tap, and refill it.
Note: This item covers one standalone small black nylon drawstring bag. Loose chemical media, biological ceramic spheres, and filtration cups are sold under separate product lines.

Instructions:
- Remove your IceCap small media bag from the packaging and open the mouth by pulling the sliding cord lock out away from the nylon collar.
Pour your desired amount of loose chemical media (such as granular carbon) or biological media directly into the open bag. Tip: Do not overstuff; leave some breathing room so water can pass through easily.
Pull the drawstring cord tight to cinch the nylon mesh collar completely closed, sliding the spring tension toggle flush against the bag mesh to lock it.
Take the loaded bag to a sink and rinse it thoroughly under running reverse osmosis (RO) or tap water to flush away any fine packaging dust before placing it in your aquarium.
Place the bag directly into a high-flow area of your filtration system, such as inside an IceCap Media Cup, a nano rear chamber compartment, or flat inside a hang-on-back power filter tray.
Refresh your filtration bed every 3 to 6 weeks by sliding the cord toggle open, discarding the old media, and washing the bag clean under warm tap water for its next deployment.
Pro Tips:
- Flatten out the Bag in Your Nano Chamber to Maximize Efficiency. When placing this small 6x8.5-inch bag into a tight nano aquarium rear chamber or a hang-on-back filter, do not scrunch it up into a thick, round ball. Water will always take the path of least resistance; if faced with a dense ball of carbon, it will simply flow around the outside edge, leaving the center of your media completely dry and useless. Flatten the bag out like a small pancake across your filter track so that every drop of water is forced to pass directly through the media bed.
- Perfect for Upgrading Drop-in Acrylic Media Cups. This small drawstring bag is explicitly designed to fit perfectly inside standard 4-inch clear or black acrylic drop-in media cups used in modern reef sumps. Instead of using disposable filter socks that clog up with sludge every 2 days, you can place a small charge of carbon inside this pouch and drop it into a media cup. This creates a highly efficient, low-maintenance passive chemical filter basket.
- Rinse the Bag Separately in Discarded Tank Water to Keep Biological Media Alive. If you are using this small nylon bag to hold biological nano media (like mini ceramic rings or small porous rock matrices), never rinse the bag under hot, chlorinated tap water during maintenance. The chlorine in tap water will instantly sterilize and wipe out your beneficial nitrifying bacterial colonies. Instead, dunk and swish the bag up and down inside a bucket of salvaged tank water during your routine water change to shed surface sludge without destroying your biological filter.
