Reef Octopus BR1000SS Space Saver Biopellet Reactor

The Reef Octopus BR1000SS Space Saver Biopellet Reactor is engineered for high-capacity nutrient export in systems where sump real estate is at a premium. By integrating the pump directly inside the reactor's base, this "Space Saver" model significantly reduces its overall footprint compared to traditional external-pump reactors. This design allows you to run a full-scale biological filtration setup in tight compartments while maintaining the 1L media capacity necessary for larger reef aquaria.

Equipped with the energy-efficient Water Blaster 1000 pump, the BR1000SS utilizes a specialized fluidizing cone bottom to drive water upward through the media. This constant motion prevents biopellets from clumping or developing anaerobic zones, ensuring that beneficial bacteria have maximum surface area to consume excess nitrates and phosphates. For aquarists managing systems up to 250 gallons, the BR1000SS provides a robust, professional-grade solution that balances high performance with a space-efficient design.

Key Features

• Space-Saving Footprint: Internal pump mounting significantly reduces the area needed in your sump.
• Fluidizing Cone Design: The conical base plate ensures uniform water distribution for a superior, consistent media tumble.
• Water Blaster Pump: Includes a reliable, low-heat pump designed specifically for high-flow aquarium applications.
• Large Reaction Chamber: Holds up to 1 liter of biopellet media for aggressive nutrient management.
• High-Quality Construction: Built from hand-polished, cell-cast acrylic for maximum durability and visibility.
• Easy Maintenance: Features a secure, removable lid and precision sieve plates for quick media changes.

Ideal For

• Large reef and mixed-species aquariums up to 250 gallons needing strict nutrient control.
• Hobbyists with complex filtration setups where every inch of sump space is already utilized.
• High-bio-load systems requiring a large volume of carbon dosing media.
• Advanced aquarists seeking a "plug-and-play" reactor with a pre-matched, integrated pump.
• Systems where minimizing external plumbing and leak points is a priority.

  1. Carefully unpack the reactor and ensure the internal Aquatrance pump is seated correctly.
  2. Add up to 1.5L of pre-soaked biopellet media to the reaction chamber.
  3. Ensure the main O-ring is clean and properly seated before tightening the lid.
  4. Place the reactor in a stable section of your sump with a consistent water level.
  5. Plug in the pump and observe the media movement; it should begin a gentle, uniform tumble.
  6. Check the output periodically to ensure the sieve plates are free of debris or bacterial mulm.
Pro Tips

Gently tap the reactor body if you notice media sticking to the sides. During the first week of operation, new pellets can sometimes clump as a bacterial film begins to form. A light tap will break them loose until the colony is fully established.

Soak your biopellets in tank water for 24 hours before adding them to the reactor. This removes trapped air from the pellets, preventing them from floating into the upper sieve and ensuring the Aquatrance pump can provide a perfect tumble from the start.

Position the BR1000SS output near your protein skimmer. Biological nutrient export relies on the skimmer to remove the bacterial biomass the reactor creates. Directing the output toward the skimmer intake ensures the most efficient nitrate and phosphate removal.
