Biopellet Reactor is Specifically Designed for the Use of Solid Carbon Dosing Biopellets

The Reef Octopus BR140 Biopellet Reactor provides a specialized chamber for the effective fluidization of solid carbon dosing media. Designed for in-sump or external use, this reactor features a unique cone-bottom design that helps direct water flow upward through the media, preventing the "dead spots" or clumping often found in flat-bottom reactors. By keeping biopellets in a constant state of motion, the BR110 maximizes the surface area available for beneficial bacteria to colonize and consume excess nitrates and phosphates.

The Reef Octopus BR140 requires a feed pump capable of providing 800-1060gph.  Its transparent, high-quality acrylic body allows you to easily monitor media levels and movement. With a capacity of up to 1 liter of media, it is an ideal nutrient management solution for aquariums up to 265 gallons, helping you achieve the pristine water quality required for sensitive marine life.

Key Features:

  • Fluidizing Cone Design: The conical base plate ensures an even distribution of water flow for a superior media tumble.
  • Top-Loading Access: The secure lid allows for easy media additions and routine maintenance without removing the entire unit.
  • Small Footprint: The compact 8.3-inch square base fits into most standard sump configurations easily.
  • Precision Sieve Plates: Internal screens keep media securely inside the reactor while allowing high-volume water passage.
  • Durable Construction: Crafted from high-quality, hand-polished acrylic for a professional look and long service life.

Ideal For:

  • Mixed reef and SPS aquariums up to 265 gallons that require consistent nitrate export.
  • Intermediate to advanced hobbyists looking for a universal biopellet setup.
  • Aquarists using standard biopellet media like Reef Octopus BioSpheres or NPX Bioplastics.
  • Hobbyists wanting to reduce their reliance on liquid carbon dosing or frequent water changes.

Instructions:

This reactor can be installed externally to the sump or placed in the sump for added security.

  1. Place the BR140 in a stable area of your sump.
  2. Add up to 2.0L of biopellet media (e.g., Reef Octopus BioSpheres) to the chamber.
  3. Ensure the O-ring is clean and seated before tightening the lid.
  4. Connect a dedicated feed pump or manifold line (sold separately) to the reactor inlet.
  5. Slowly turn on the water flow and adjust until the pellets are "simmering" or tumbling gently.
  6. Check for leaks at the lid and union connections during the first hour of operation.

Pro Tips:

  • Select a pump with a slightly higher GPH than needed. Because biopellets become heavier as they are colonized by bacteria, you may need to slightly increase the flow after a few weeks to maintain the same tumble. A pump with a controllable flow rate is ideal for this.
  • Pre-soak your biopellets for 24 hours. To prevent the pellets from floating or being pushed against the top sieve, soak them in a container of aquarium water before adding them to the BR140. This removes trapped air and ensures an even tumble from day one.
  • Direct the reactor's effluent into the intake of your protein skimmer. This is the most efficient way to export the bacterial biomass produced by the reactor. It also ensures the water is properly re-oxygenated before returning to the main display.
