Prop Impeller Water Pump for Return and Media Reactor Feed Applications

The Reef Octopus Aquatrance 1500 is a prop impeller water pump designed for return and feed pump applications in reef and freshwater aquariums. It moves up to 390gph at a maximum head of 4.8ft and draws 18 watts. The pump installs submersed or externally, giving it flexibility for in-sump or external plumbing configurations.
The prop impeller design makes the AQ-1500 a practical choice for low-to-medium flow applications where a quiet, efficient pump is needed without a large footprint. At 4.5 x 2.4 x 3.6in it fits in tight sump chambers and compact equipment areas.

Key Features:

  • Max flow: 390gph
  • Max head: 4.8ft
  • Power consumption: 18 watts
  • Prop impeller design
  • Submersed or external installation
  • Compact form factor: 4.5 x 2.4 x 3.6in

Ideal For:

  • Sump return pump duty on small to mid-size reef and freshwater aquariums
  • Feed pump for media reactors, biopellet reactors, and kalkwasser reactors requiring low, steady flow
  • Secondary or auxiliary circulation where a small, low-wattage pump is needed
  • Tight sump chambers where a compact pump footprint is a priority

Pro Tips:

  • Match the pump to your head pressure, not just the flow rate. At 4.8ft max head, the AQ-1500 is suited to shorter return runs. If your sump-to-display distance plus fittings and bends adds up to more than 4ft of head, the Aquatrance 1800 or 2000 will maintain better actual flow at the display.
  • Use it as a dedicated reactor feed pump. The AQ-1500's 390gph max and compact size make it a natural fit for feeding a calcium or media reactor where you want steady, controllable flow without pulling from your main return line. Running a dedicated feed pump also simplifies tuning reactor dwell time.
  • Run it externally if heat is a concern. Both submersed and external configurations are supported. If your sump runs warm, mounting the pump externally keeps that 18 watts of heat outside the water column.

Instructions:

  1. Determine whether the pump will be installed submersed or externally before placing it in your sump or equipment area.
  2. For submersed installation, place the pump in the return section of your sump. Ensure water level will remain above the pump inlet at all times to prevent dry running.
  3. For external installation, position the pump so the inlet draws from below the water surface. Ensure all fittings are secure and airtight before powering on.
  4. Connect the pump outlet to your return line or reactor feed line using appropriate fittings for your plumbing size.
  5. Plug the pump into a grounded outlet. For return pump use, connect to a controller or smart outlet if shutoff automation is desired.
  6. Power on the pump and confirm flow at the return outlet or reactor inlet before leaving unattended.
  7. For reactor feed use, adjust flow rate at the reactor's flow valve rather than restricting the pump inlet.
