1-1/2in Bulkhead Slip to Slip ABS
SKU: ROP-BKABS-VP25E
- 100% Virgin ABS Infrastructure: Molded from premium, non-recycled ABS resin that prevents micro-stress fractures and easily handles the weight of heavy pipe runs.
- Dual Smooth Slip Ports: Smooth unthreaded sockets on both ends accommodate standard 1-1/2 inch PVC pipe for a permanent, solvent-welded joint connection.
- Double-Thick Locking Nut: Engineered with a thick, heavy-duty locking nut that distributes clamping force evenly and resists thread stripping under torque.
- Premium Long-Life EPDM Gasket: Equipped with a thick, high-flexibility compression gasket that resists drying out, rotting, or compression set under salt water.
- Reef and Invertebrate Safe: Fully inert materials protect delicate marine environments from toxin leaching, heavy metal cross-contamination, or skimmer disruptions.

Heavy-Duty 1-1/2 Inch Slip x Slip ABS Aquarium Bulkhead Fitting (SKU: BH150-S)
The Heavy-Duty 1-1/2 Inch Slip x Slip ABS Aquarium Bulkhead Fitting (SKU: BH150-S / R441017) is an authentic structural water pass-through engineered specifically to preserve high-volume flow integrity and provide permanent, leak-free drainage pathways in marine reef tanks, central sumps, and commercial aquaculture installations. Bulkhead fittings act as the critical bridge across an open hole drilled directly into glass or acrylic tanks, shielding structural margins from hydraulic pressure while routing raw wastewater safely down to your mechanical roller filters or protein skimmers. Utilizing standard white PVC fittings on commercial aquarium installations can be risky due to plastic brittleness and weak nut dimensions. This premium alternative relies entirely on heavy-wall ABS construction, introducing exceptional elasticity, high impact protection, and complete defense against structural cracks.
Calibrated to fit standard North American plumbing specifications, the BH150-S accommodates smooth 1-1/2" Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 US Imperial PVC pipe sections directly inside its inner tracking tracks. Because both the flange side and the nut side feature smooth "slip" ports, it eliminates structural flow resistance caused by interior threads, allowing water to pass through silently without head-pressure drag or air gurgles. Whether you are expanding a high-capacity bean-animal drain, configuring a simple durso standpipe, or constructing a custom reservoir farm under your stand, this thick-wall fitting establishes an airtight seal that easily absorbs pump vibrations and dynamic shifting loads over years of routine operation.
Key Features
Prevents Disastrous Tank Ruptures: Offers a broad flange profile that safely pins against the tank pane, reinforcing the area immediately surrounding the drilled glass edge.
Resists Persistent Salt Creep: The heavy-wall polymer composition handles direct saltwater splashing, localized ozone injection, and seasonal vinegar flushes without losing structural strength.
Tool-Free Clamping Alignment: Specially designed perimeter ribbing along the external tracking nut lets you hand-tighten the fitting safely without scratching your tank.

- Dry-fit the bulkhead into your drilled tank wall pane. Confirm that your hole measures exactly 2-3/8 inches and that the bulkhead flange body sits flat against the glass surface.
- Clean the area around the hole on both sides of the tank with a microfiber towel soaked in fresh water to clear away any glass dust, sand grains, or grease.
- Place the soft black compression gasket directly onto the bulkhead body shaft, sliding it completely flush against the wide flange face. Note: The gasket must always rest on the same side of the tank pane as the flange.
- Insert the bulkhead shaft through your drilled hole from the inside of your tank out (or from the wet-side to the dry-side). The soft gasket should be sandwiched firmly between the hard flange and the tank wall.
- Thread the thick ABS locking nut onto the dry side of the bulkhead shaft. Spin the nut down by hand until it makes solid contact with the glass pane, then give it an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn to compress the gasket. Do not overtighten.
- Lightly scuff the inside slip sockets with fine sandpaper, wipe them clean, and use standard PVC primer and solvent cement to weld your 1-1/2" PVC pipe permanently into place. Let the joints dry for 24 hours before testing.
Pro Tips:
- The Gasket Always Follows the Flange, Never the Locking Nut.
CRITICAL AQUARIUM LEAK WARNING: Regardless of whether you install the bulkhead flange inside the water (wet-side) or outside the reservoir (dry-side), the soft black compression gasket must always sit directly beneath the hard flange face. Never place the gasket on the nut side of the wall pane. As you tighten the bulkhead, the turning action of the locking nut will twist, bunch, and tear a gasket placed beneath it, creating tracking channels that will cause an active leak under your stand.
- Hand-Tighten Only — Never Use Metal Wrenches or Channel Locks. When securing the locking nut against glass or acrylic sump panes, always spin and lock the nut using purely hand pressure. Attempting to torque a plastic bulkhead down using metal plumbing wrenches, large channel locks, or pipe vices will crush the soft gasket out of alignment or split the ABS body threads. Hand-tightening provides more than enough compression to achieve an absolute, permanent seal without risking micro-fractures in your glass pane.
- Utilize Designated Multi-Purpose Cements for ABS-to-PVC Joints. Because this bulkhead is engineered from rigid, UV-stabilized ABS plastic and your drain lines are constructed from standard PVC pipe, always utilize a designated multi-purpose solvent cement or an ABS-to-PVC transition glue to bind the lines. Standard thin clear PVC glues can dry out over time without creating a true chemical weld against an ABS socket wall, which can cause the pressurized pipeline to slip out or weep slowly under system vibrations.
