- High-Density Micro-Sanctuary: Multi-layered disc layout creates a protected, high-surface-area labyrinth where micro-crustaceans can thrive and breed away from fish.
- Targeted Food Supply Support: Provides a continuous source of live food for finicky fish like Mandarins, Seahorses, and Scooter Blennies.
- Smart Floating Cord Design: Includes a dedicated nylon lanyard tether that allows the habitat to float freely or anchor onto baffle walls at your preferred depth.
- Zero-Tool Easy Maintenance: Threaded central shaft configuration twists apart quickly, making it easy to rinse out trapped detritus during water changes.
- 100% Reef-Safe Plastic Assembly: Constructed entirely from non-toxic, industrial-grade polymer composites that will not leach chemicals into your water.
- Compact Footprint Engineering: Fits easily into tight sump spaces, rear chambers of all-in-one aquariums, or dense macroalgae refugium zones.

IceCap Pod Habitat — Copepod & Amphipod Sanctuary (SKU: IC-POD-HAB)
The IceCap Pod Habitat (SKU: IC-POD-HAB) is an authentic, high-yield biological cultivation module distributed by CoralVue to naturally increase and stabilize the population of beneficial micro-crustaceans inside marine reef aquariums. Copepods and amphipods play a vital dual role in saltwater ecosystems: they serve as an elite clean-up crew that consumes nuisance film algae and detritus, and they provide a crucial, lipid-rich live food source for specialized hunters like Mandarin Dragonets, pipefish, smaller wrasses, and delicate corals. However, without a dedicated shelter, these tiny invertebrates are quickly wiped out by fish. The IceCap Pod Habitat provides a secure, sheltered nursery where your micro-fauna can feed, grow, and reproduce without interruption.
The structural design of the IC-POD-HAB centers on a series of precisely spaced, textured Stackable Protection Discs held together by a central non-corrosive column. The spacing between each plate is calculated to allow small pods, larvae, and micro-fauna to move freely while keeping out larger predators like hungry fish or crabs. When placed in a nutrient-rich area like a refugium or sump compartment near Chaetomorpha algae, the habitat accumulates organic particulates and micro-algae, offering an abundant food source for growing pods. To seed your display tank, simply pick up the habitat by its integrated nylon cord, submerge it into your main display, and give it a quick shake to release hundreds of live pods right into your rockwork.
Key Features
Supports Natural Feeding Habits: Keeps fish active and healthy by providing a steady supply of live prey, mirroring their natural hunting behavior on the reef.
Reduces Nuisance Detritus Build-Up: Promotes the growth of benthic organisms that consume fish waste and organic debris before they break down into nitrates.
Versatile Placement Options: Can float freely in your sump's return section, rest on the bottom glass, or tie directly onto internal filtration plumbing.
(Note: This retail package arrives fully assembled and includes (1) multi-disc Pod Habitat core structure and (1) pre-tied nylon placement tether cord).

- Unbox your IceCap Pod Habitat and rinse it under fresh RO/DI water to remove any plastic dust or packing residue from shipping.
- Select a low-velocity, nutrient-rich location in your system, such as a dedicated refugium zone or right next to your sump's macroalgae beds.
- Tie the included nylon lanyard around a nearby pipe, probe holder, or cabinet brace to anchor the habitat, letting the main disc body float freely in the water column.
- The Population Boost Phase: To speed up the colonization process, pour a fresh bottle of live commercial copepods directly over the submerged discs with your filtration pumps turned off for 10 minutes.
- Leave the module completely undisturbed for 3 to 4 weeks. This allows a thick, hidden population of adult pods and microscopic larvae to establish deep within the inner disc core.
- To harvest your live food, pull the habitat out by its lanyard cord, move it over to your primary display tank, and shake it vigorously underwater near your rockwork. Watch your fish hunt the newly released pods immediately.
Pro Tips:
- Harvest at Night After Your Main Aquarium Lights Turn Off. Copepods are naturally nocturnal creatures that tend to hide deep within rock crevices during the daytime to avoid predators. To maximize your feeding success and help your pod population establish in the display tank, harvest the habitat about 30 to 60 minutes after your main tank lights turn off. Shaking the pods out into the dark gives them a much better chance to crawl safely into your display rockwork before your fish wake up and see them.
- Swill the Discs in Raw Tank Water During Water Changes to Avoid Pod Losses. Over time, floating organic matter and detritus will settle within the tight spaces of the protection plates. While this debris provides food for the pods, an excessive buildup can restrict oxygen flow through the core. During your monthly water changes, remove the habitat and swirl it inside your bucket of old tank water. This loosens excess waste without killing off your live seed colony with chlorinated tap water.
- Add a Small Pinch of Powdered Phytoplankton to Turn the Core Into a Powerhouse Nursery. If your refugium doesn't have a high amount of natural microalgae growth, you can easily turn the IC-POD-HAB into a high-yield nursery by dosing powdered or concentrated liquid phytoplankton. Twice a week, turn off your return pumps and squirt a tiny cloud of phytoplankton directly over the habitat using a pipette. The inner discs will trap the micro-particles, creating a highly nutritious feeding ground that dramatically accelerates pod reproduction rates.
