Super Reef Octopus SRO-3000INT Internal In-Sump Protein Skimmer
The Super Reef Octopus SRO-3000INT (Model No: SRO-3000INT) represents the pinnacle of high-volume, professional-grade organic waste extraction for marine reef aquariums up to 300 gallons. In heavy, fish-dense displays and coral environments packed with heavy-feeding small polyp stony (SPS) corals, dissolved organic compounds accumulate rapidly. If left unmitigated, these proteins break down into high nitrate and phosphate concentrations, choking coral health and sparking massive nuisance algae blooms. The SRO-3000INT intercepts these compounds directly within your sump, systematically fractionating wastewater to strip out organic material before it can degrade your water chemistry.
The underlying secret to the SRO-3000INT's legendary performance is its Bubble Blaster HY-3000 pinwheel skimmer pump. Unlike repurposed standard utility pumps with basic straight-blade impellers, the Bubble Blaster is designed explicitly for gas-liquid fractionating. Drawing an efficient 40 Watts, it uses a high-density matrix needlewheel to slice incoming water and air into a micro-bubble cloud, pulling an incredible 1,100 L/H of air. To contain this fierce hydraulic force, the skimmer features a specialized 8-inch hybrid cone body layout. This shape channels micro-bubbles upward through a widening column, naturally dampening chaotic surface turbulence so proteins can climb smoothly up the 4.73-inch neck and deposit into the oversized collection cup.
Key Features
Industrial Cast Acrylic Core: Solid, optical-grade structural composition resistant to ozone exposure, impact damage, and under-cabinet chemical treatments.
Acoustic Mitigation Air Silencer: Features a high-volume, oversized intake air muffler that completely dampens harsh venturi hissing sounds for nearly silent cabinet operation.
Wedge Output Gate Valve: Provides microscopic control over your internal water level, making it simple to dial in dry, dense gunk or a wet organic flush.
Bubble Dispersal Shielding: The internal base plate neutralizes horizontal pump currents, forcing bubbles into a perfectly vertical path to increase contact time.
Integrated Sump Safety Drain: The collection cup is outfitted with an external nipple port, allowing you to plumb waste directly out to a dedicated reservoir or remote locker.

- Carefully unpack the acrylic parts and check that the internal base bubble dispersant plate is locked flat over the pump housing track.
- Seat the heavy-duty Bubble Blaster 3000 pump inside the skimmer base plate, slip on the max-injection venturi throat, and secure the clear silicone air line to the silencer stand.
- Lower the fully assembled SRO-3000INT body into your sump's designated mechanical compartment, ensuring your running water level sits between 6 and 6.5 inches deep.
- Align the easy-turn output wedge gate valve assembly so it drains directly back into your sump without restricting adjacent return pump ports.
- Firmly seat the oversized collection cup into the neck collar, plug the Bubble Blaster 3000 cord into a standard GFCI outlet, and check that air bubbles are generating.
- Let the skimmer break in for 72 hours, then slowly turn the precision wedge gate valve until the internal micro-bubble foam line balances cleanly right below the collection cup neck ring.
- Lock in the 6-Inch Sump Depth. The SRO-3000INT is meticulously balanced around a static internal water head pressure. To get the absolute most out of your skimmer, mount it in a sump compartment that maintains a steady depth between 6 and 6.5 inches. If your sump lacks an adjustable weir gate or runs deeper than 6.5 inches, place a solid plastic or eggcrate skimmer stand beneath the pump base to elevate the unit into its optimal running zone.
- Perform the Warm Venturi Flush. Because the Bubble Blaster 3000 draws a high volume of air through a saltwater environment, salt creep and calcium scale can slowly crystallize inside the narrow venturi nozzle. To prevent the pump from choking out, pull the air line off the silencer once a month and submerge the tip in a small cup of hot RO/DI water. The pump will draw the warm fresh water straight through its intake, instantly dissolving internal crusts without requiring tool breakdown.
- Allow for Manufacturing Break-In. Every new protein skimmer ships with micro-residues on its acrylic surfaces from manufacturing and flame-polishing. For the first few days of operation, these residues can cause the skimmer to foam erratically or overflow. Do not attempt to correct this by twisting the output gate valve down tightly. Instead, leave the wedge valve completely wide open for the first week, allowing the plastic to condition naturally to your reef's unique bioload.
