Reef Octopus Biopellet Reactor Down Pipe with Check Valve

The Reef Octopus Biopellet Reactor Down Pipe is a specialized internal plumbing component designed to safeguard your filtration system. Engineered as a direct replacement part for the BR110 series, this downpipe features an integrated check valve. This valve serves a critical safety function: it ensures that water and media only move in one direction—downward and out through the fluidizing plate.

Without a functional check valve, a power failure or pump shutdown can cause biopellet media to backflow into the intake plumbing or even into the pump volute itself. This can lead to seized impellers or clogged pipes when power is restored. Replacing a worn or stuck-down pipe assembly maintains the "simmering" fluidization required for effective nitrate and phosphate reduction while adding an extra layer of protection for your expensive aquarium equipment.

    Key Features

    • Genuine Replacement Part: Guaranteed fit for Reef Octopus BR110 biopellet reactors.
    • Integrated Backflow Prevention: The internal check valve stops media from traveling backward into the pump.
    • One-Way Flow Optimization: Designed to direct water efficiently to the base of the reactor for a perfect tumble.
    • Saltwater Grade Materials: High-impact PVC construction resists corrosion and debris buildup.
    • Easy Installation: Slides into the existing internal assembly for a quick, tool-free repair.

    Ideal For

    • Hobbyists replacing a cracked or malfunctioning internal reactor pipe.
    • Owners of older BR-series reactors where the original check valve has seized.
    • Preventing pump damage caused by biopellets entering the impeller housing.
    • Ensuring consistent fluidization and preventing "dead spots" in the media chamber.
    • Reefers performing a complete overhaul of their Reef Octopus filtration equipment.

    1. Turn off the feed pump and disconnect the reactor from its water source.
    2. Open the reactor lid and carefully remove the biopellet media.
    3. Pull the old down pipe assembly upward to remove it from the central port.
    4. Insert the new down pipe with check valve, ensuring it is seated firmly at the base.
    5. Refill the reactor with media and secure the lid.
    6. Restart the pump and verify that flow is moving correctly through the base plate.
    Pro Tips

Test the check valve periodically during media changes. While the reactor is empty, pour a small amount of water down the pipe to ensure the valve closes properly and doesn't allow water to sit. This ensures it will work during a real power outage.

Clean the valve seat if you notice flow restriction. Occasionally, a small piece of media or bacterial mulm can get stuck in the valve. A quick rinse with freshwater or a soak in a weak citric acid solution will restore a perfect seal.

Always ensure the pipe is fully seated at the bottom of the reactor. If the pipe is loose, water will bypass the fluidizing plate, causing the pellets at the bottom to stay still while the pellets at the top tumble unevenly.
