Reef Octopus BR140 Biopellet Reactor Media Containment Screens
Proper media containment is essential for the safe and efficient operation of any biopellet reactor. These Reef Octopus Media Containment Screens are genuine factory replacement sieve plates designed to fit the BR140 series of reactors. Their primary function is to allow high-volume water flow to pass through the chamber while keeping the solid carbon dosing media securely contained within the reaction zone.
Over time, reactor screens can become warped, brittle, or permanently clogged with calcium deposits and bacterial biomass. A damaged screen can allow small pieces of biopellet media to escape the reactor, potentially clogging your return pumps or settling in your sump where they can cause localized nutrient spikes. Replacing your worn sieve plates with these precision-cut factory parts restores the original safety and performance of your Reef Octopus filtration system.
Key Features
• OEM Precision Fit: Guaranteed to fit the specific diameters of the Reef Octopus BR-series reactor bodies.
• High-Flow Sieve Geometry: Engineered to maximize water throughput while preventing even small or worn pellets from escaping.
• Durable Materials: Constructed from high-quality, non-corrosive components for a long service life in marine sumps.
• Maintains Fluidization: Ensures an even distribution of water across the media bed for a superior cyclone or tumbling effect.
• Easy Maintenance: Can be quickly removed and rinsed during regular media changes to prevent flow restriction.
Ideal For
• Replacing cracked or damaged screens on Reef Octopus BR140 reactors.
• Hobbyists who have noticed biopellets escaping into their sump or aquarium.
• Restoring optimal flow to a reactor where the original screens have become permanently clogged.
• Performing a full biological filtration system refresh or seasonal maintenance.
• Ensuring new, smaller-diameter biopellets are properly contained during initial startup.

- Turn off the feed pump and disconnect the reactor from its power source.
- Remove the reactor lid and empty the biopellet media into a clean container.
- Lift out the old containment screen from the reactor body or off the central down pipe.
- Rinse the reactor chamber and ensure no grit is present in the screen seating area.
- Press the new screen firmly into place, ensuring it is level and secure.
- Re-add the media, secure the lid, and restart the pump to verify flow.
Clean your screens with a soft brush during every media change. Bacterial mulm can create a "skin" over the sieve holes that reduces flow. A quick scrub with an old toothbrush under freshwater will keep your reactor running at peak efficiency.
Check for warped screens if your media isn't tumbling evenly. If the screen is bent, water will follow the path of least resistance, causing the pellets on one side to stay still while others tumble too fast. Replacing a warped screen immediately fixes this.
Soak clogged screens in a weak citric acid solution. If you have heavy calcium buildup that won't brush off, a 30-minute soak in citric acid or vinegar will dissolve the deposits and restore full flow through the sieve plate.
