Reef Octopus BioChurn 90INT Reactor with HOB Bracket

The Reef Octopus BioChurn 90INT Reactor offers a high-performance solution for biological nutrient export in smaller marine systems. Utilizing a specialized patent-pending churn plate, this reactor generates a unique cyclone motion that keeps biopellet media in constant suspension. This motion prevents the common issue of media clumping and ensures that every pellet is fully utilized by beneficial bacteria to break down nitrates and phosphates.

What sets the Reef Octopus BioChurn 90INT apart is its mounting versatility. While designed for internal in-sump use, it includes a robust hang-on-back (HOB) bracket that allows it to be secured to the side of a sump or aquarium, freeing up floor space for other equipment. Powered by the energy-efficient Aquatrance 800 pump, this reactor provides the perfect balance of flow and fluidization for tanks up to 100 gallons.

Key Features

• Cyclone Fluidization: The patent-pending dispersant plate ensures pellets "churn" evenly rather than just tumbling, maximizing bacterial contact. • Integrated HOB Bracket: Includes a versatile mounting bracket compatible with various sump and tank rim thicknesses. • Aquatrance 800 Pump: Comes standard with a reliable, low-heat pump designed specifically for aquarium filtration. • Compact Design: The 3.5-inch body diameter makes it one of the most space-efficient biopellet reactors available. • Easy Maintenance: The top-entry design and secure sieve plates allow for quick media refills and cleaning. • High-Quality Acrylic: Precision-engineered from solid, cell-cast acrylic for maximum durability and clarity.

Ideal For

• Small to medium reef aquariums (up to 100 gallons) struggling with elevated nitrate levels.
• Hobbyists with very limited sump space who need to utilize hang-on mounting options.
• Advanced nano-reef keepers looking for a stable, automated carbon-dosing solution.
• Aquarists transitioning from high-maintenance GFO or carbon reactors to biopellets.
• Systems requiring precise phosphate management for sensitive LPS or SPS corals.

  1. Ensure the reactor is clean and all O-rings are lubricated with silicone grease if necessary.

  2. Fill the reactor with up to 400ml of your chosen biopellet media; do not overfill, as space is needed for the churn motion.

  3. Attach the HOB bracket to the reactor body and secure it to your sump wall.

  4. Verify the Aquatrance 800 pump is firmly connected to the intake.

  5. Submerge the pump and plug it in; ensure the pellets begin a steady circular "churning" motion.

  6. Monitor nutrient levels over the first month and adjust media volume as needed.

Pro Tips
Use the HOB bracket to elevate the reactor out of detritus zones. In small sumps, debris can collect on the floor. Using the mounting bracket to hang the reactor keeps the pump intake in cleaner water, extending the life of the impeller.

Slowly introduce biopellets to avoid a bacterial bloom. When starting a new reactor on an established tank, start with 25% of the recommended media. Adding too much carbon at once can cause a "white cloud" bacterial bloom that depletes oxygen.

Ensure the output is directed toward a high-flow area. Directing the reactor's effluent toward your skimmer or a high-flow return area ensures the oxygen-depleted water is quickly re-oxygenated, and bacterial film is removed.
