Reef Octopus Aquatrance 800 Submersible & External Utility Water Pump

The Reef Octopus Aquatrance 800 Water Pump (SKU: AQ-800) is a highly efficient, versatile utility pump engineered to provide dependable fluid circulation across fresh and saltwater ecosystems. While pinwheel skimmer pumps are restricted exclusively to foam fractionating, the Aquatrance 800 utilizes a standard open-blade propeller impeller. This design makes it a superb choice for driving low-head return lines, delivering continuous influent to media or carbon reactors, or acting as a reliable, space-saving fluid transfer pump within your sump basin.

Operating on an incredibly economical 7-watt power grid, the AQ-800 manages a maximum water turnover rate of 240 gallons per hour with a maximum head height of 3.0 feet. Its completely sealed, epoxy-potted motor housing can operate entirely submerged inside a filtration compartment or placed externally as an inline dry pump. Built around a precision-ground ceramic shaft paired with protective composite end bushings, this utility pump minimizes heat transfer to your water column while defending against the hard calcium scaling and salt friction that often plague generic utility pumps.

    Key Features

    • Versatile Fluid Delivery: Perfectly optimized for feeding flow to media reactors, small aquarium return lines, and automated water change loops.

    • Flexible Hose Attachment: Arrives complete with targeted stepped hose barb adapters to connect easily with standard soft vinyl hobby tubing runs.

    • Adjustable Intake Screen: Includes a removable front suction plate with a manual slider to easily customize your incoming water flow rates.

    • Robust Hardware Isolation: Heavy-duty rubber mounting suction cups cushion the base frame, neutralizing rattling vibrations against glass or acrylic sump walls.

    • Compact Footprint Integration: Bypasses unnecessary external casing bulk to give you maximum breathing room in tight or crowded sump spaces.

    Operational Performance Metrics

    • Maximum Volumetric Flow Rate: 240 GPH (908 LPH)

    • Maximum Dynamic Head Height: 3.0 Feet

    • Standard Hard Plumb Interface: 1/2-Inch Inlet / Outlet Sockets

    • Included Barb Step Adapters: Fits 0.67-Inch and 0.79-Inch Inner Diameter Vinyl Hoses

    • (Note: This is a non-pressure-rated utility pump; it is not intended for high-head multi-floor basements or high-resistance Beckett/downdraft skimmers)

    1. Unplug all active electrical connections in your filtration area before installing or servicing your aquarium water line.
    2. If installing submersed, press the pump firmly onto the bottom floor of your sump glass to let the suction cups lock.
    3. For hard plumbing setups, thread your standard 1/2-inch female union couplers clockwise straight onto the pump's inlet and outlet snouts until hand-tight.
    4. For soft plumbing setups, screw the provided stepped barb adapter onto the output, soften your vinyl hose with warm water, and slide it tightly over the barbs.
    5. Fill your sump or plumbing loop completely with water to prime the lines; never operate the internal propeller dry.
    6. Connect the main power line to a GFCI-protected safety wall bank, and adjust the front slider nozzle to hit your desired flow target.

    Pro Tips:

    • Always Avoid Dry Running. Never power on the Aquatrance 800 unless the internal impeller chamber is completely flooded with water. Because this is a standard magnetic-drive utility pump, it relies on surrounding water to lubricate the spinning ceramic shaft assembly. Running the pump dry causes immediate friction heat, warping the plastic impeller blades and permanently damaging the motor block.
    • Keep the Front Screen Free of Macroalgae. If you run this pump inside a refugium zone containing loose macroalgae like Chaetomorpha, check the adjustable front intake screen every week. The high suction velocity will pull loose plant strands and detritus mats directly against the intake slits. If left uncleaned, this blockage starves the pump of water, causing it to run hot and shortening its lifespan.
    • Ideal Reactor Companion. Due to its steady 240 GPH flow rate and incredibly low 7-watt power usage, the AQ-800 makes a perfect standalone feed pump for small-to-medium biopellet, GFO, or carbon reactors. Utilizing a dedicated feed pump like the AQ-800 instead of manifold plumbing prevents pressure drops on your main return line, keeping your overall system flow rate much more stable.
